LEGO Star Wars Visual Dictionary New Edition

TFN Review: LEGO Star Wars Visual Dictionary New Edition From DK

Posted by Adam on May 6, 2019 at 12:24 PM CST

1999 was a big year for Star Wars fans, most notably due to the release of Episode I: The Phantom Menace and the inaugural Star Wars Celebration that preceded it weeks earlier. Along with the more familiar toys and collectibles that appeared in stores to support the movie, the year also marked the debut of LEGO sets and to celebrate the 20th anniversary, DK have updated their LEGO Star Wars Visual Dictionary.

As has been the case with many of DK's LEGO Star Wars titles, the book includes an exclusive minifigure, which for this outing, is Finn in his bacta suit.

Opening with an introduction and a timeline showing the milestones over the two decades, the book is then broken-up into five chapters, the first three coinciding with the prequel, original and sequel trilogies. Chapter four covers Specialist Sets, while the final chapter takes readers Beyond the Brick.

Along with a short paragraph to provide a bit of background on the nature of the set, data boxes accompany all those listed in the book, providing the name and number, year of release, number of pieces and source, which covers not only all of the movies and animated TV series, but Legends as well! Dotted throughout are Brick Facts which provide notable details on subjects such as the colour of various Chewbacca minifigures, exclusive pack-ins with DK's previous LEGO Star Wars books and also how the hologram of Emperor Palpatine was achieved. For a number of the largest sets, a more-detailed data file is provided in place of the data box.

Given the time period covered, it stands to reason that the first two chapters represent the majority of the book's contents, with each split fairly evenly across the first nearly-one hundred pages. Major characters get their own sections, as do different factions, species like the Geonosians and Gungans, as well as pivotal events, planets and locations.

Each character page features various sets which included the corresponding minifigure with some also featuring references to the development of the character's minifigure over time. Faction and designated group pages typically focus on vehicles and starships as well as an overview of associated individuals as is the case for the Jedi Order and Clone Troopers.

Chapter 4: Specialist Sets starts with a look at sets based on stories that are now considered to be Legends as well as original LEGO creations from the company's animated TV shows. This is followed by several pages dedicated to Planet Sets, Microfighters and Mini Sets, before moving onto LEGO Technic, Buildable Figures, eight pages looking at the Ultimate Collector Series sets and finally closing out with the Seasonal Sets that debuted in 2011.

The final chapter, Beyond the Brick introduces readers to the LEGO Star Wars design team, briefly describing the process that results in producing such incredible builds as well as their approach to using the latest technology and listening to feedback from the fans.

The book wraps up with a couple of pages devoted to the past twenty years of LEGO Star Wars, celebrating the anniversary and looking to the future, promotional pieces including the life-size X-wing in Times Square, rare minifigures, convention exclusives and finally some amazing fan creations.

The LEGO Star Wars Visual Dictionary New Edition by Simon Beecroft, Jason Fry and Simon Hugo is priced $21.99 in the U.S. and $28.99 in Canada.
