TFN Review: Meet the Heroes: R2-D2 & Meet the Villains: Darth Vader From DK

To coincide with the Star Wars: Galaxy of Adventures shorts on the official Star Wars YouTube channel, DK have launched a new series of books aimed at younger readers who are wanting to know about some of the main characters from the Star Wars saga. Divided into two sub-series entitled "Meet the Heroes" and "Meet the Villains", the first two books take a look at R2-D2 and Darth Vader respectively.

Working on the basis that the reader knows nothing about the character in question, the back covers and opening pages give an indication of the types of questions that will be answered, such as "Does he have other droid friends?" and "Is Darth Vader human?" and the glossary at the back of each covers very basic terms.

In Meet the Heroes: R2-D2, author Emma Grange, begins by describing who R2-D2 is and where he came from, before covering many of the different adventures that the plucky little astromech has had since we first encountered him, chronologically speaking, serving Queen Amidala on her Naboo starship. We learn how big R2 is, who his friends are, which planets he has visited and many of his skills and talents when it comes to hacking enemy systems, distracting his foes and escaping the Empire! R2-D2 fans will be pleased to know that more adventures lie ahead, with old and new friends needing his help in the battle against the First Order.

The first question answered in Meet the Villains: Darth Vader by Ruth Amos, is "Who is this scary figure?", before moving on to discuss "What is a Sith?" and briefly touching upon Darth Vader's master, Darth Sidious/Emperor Palpatine. The book then provides a short history lesson on Vader's origins and how he came to be, and then proceeds to provide answers to questions such as "Why does Vader make a strange breathing noise?" and "How many artificial limbs does he have?". In addition to the Sith Lord himself, we also find out about Vader's lightsaber, his starship, his castle and also his former padawan, Ahsoka Tano! The tail end of the book covers the events of the original saga from Vader dueling against Obi-Wan through to his redemption at the end of Return of the Jedi.

Both books will offer nothing new to long-term fans, but they are not the intended audience. These are an ideal way of introducing the characters of Star Wars to younger children and are great for those who are in the process of learning to read. Look for Meet the Heroes: Chewbacca & Meet the Villains: Stormtroopers next!

Meet the Heroes: R2-D2 & Meet the Villains: Darth Vader are both priced $7.99 in the U.S. and $9.99 in Canada and each would make a great gift idea with the holidays fast approaching!

As always, a big thanks to DK Canada, whose Star Wars books you can check out at here. For all of your monthly roundup of Star Wars publishing news, commentary, and discussion on the latest releases in the realm of novels, comics, and magazines, don't forget to listen to Jedi Journals.
