The first episode of LEGO Star Wars: The Freemakers Adventures was really well done. The animation was great, the story was intriguing, and the characters were unique to Star Wars. It was void of the extreme silliness that other LEGO specials have brought, and all in all I was impressed.
So what about the second episode.
The second episode of the series came just one night later, as Disney XD celebrated the release of the show by having new episodes all week. Although it was not as good as the first one, I was left feeling confident that this series will stay on track with the story, and become something that can be funny, while also being serious.
Titled "The Mines of Garballa," the second episode continued Rowan and Naare's search for the kyber saber crystals. Rowan's force training has continued, and he is now learning to levitate objects. Naare has to stay on her mission from the Empire though, so she sets Rowan off on a journey to find the kyber crystals.
Kordi has an issue with Rowan and Naare going off on a search for the crystals, which opened a door for Roger and Rowan to sneak off without permission while the two ladies argued. From there, Roger and Rowan find themselves in an asteroid field, and that isn't the worst part.
They eventually end up on a Hutt mining facility where Jabba's cousin, Garballa The Hutt, runs the place. After recovering the crystal, Rowan and Roger are confronted by Garballa's guards and pretend to be bounty hunters to escape. There were some nice throwbacks like Rowan wearing Boushh's helmet, and Roger being named IG-89.
Garballa then meets the two and challenges them to a fight with Dengar, who is Garballa's resident bounty hunter. There was some funny lines in there about Dengar not being Boba Fett, and all in all the humor was a nice connection to classic Star Wars characters and it was fun to see them not take the saga so seriously.
Zander, Kordi, and Naare find Rowan and Roger and after a struggle against Garballa they escape with the crystal and the mission was a success.
This episode had a few more silly moments than the first. This is a LEGO special, so that's expected, and they did a good job of not overdoing it. We got a cameo from Jabba and Dengar, and seeing classic characters show up adds a little more spice to the show. It is still about the Freemakers, but we have already seen the Emperor, Darth Vader, Dengar, and Jabba the Hutt in just the first two episodes. That gets me excited about who we might see in the future.
I'm glad they kept the story connective as they are still in search of the kyber crystals, and that makes this feel like a legitimate series with a real story. The humor was delicately sprinkled in to remind us that this is for little kids and to have fun with the saga every once in a while.
The animation was again fantastic, and seeing the ships jump to hyperspace was a nice touch. The score was a nice mix of original music and John Williams' classics, and worked really well with the show. So far, I have enjoyed watching the first two episodes of the series. Here's hoping that continues as we move forward.
