Star Wars Resistance

Star Wars Resistance Season One Top Five Episodes

Posted by Steve on March 25, 2019 at 02:22 PM CST

Now that Season One of Star Wars Resistance is complete and we are left waiting for Season Two to start in the Fall, why not look back at the last 22 episodes and pick our favorites?

There were many memorable episodes sprinkled throughout the season, but for me, these five were the ones that I enjoyed the most. Not surprisingly, they usually involve Tam Ryvora, Captain Doza, Synara San or Agent Tierny, my favorite characters from this season.

Obviously there are some spoilers from the show just in case you haven't seen it all the way through yet. So, read through mine then let me know which episodes you enjoyed the most!

Here they are!

Star Wars Resistance

Episode 07 – “Signal from Sector Six”

“When out on a routine training exercise, a distress signal sends Kaz and Poe to a damaged ship with strange lifeforms onboard.”

Kazuda and Poe Dameron go on three missions together this season, the other two being “Station Theta-Black” and “The Core Problem” But, as great as those two were, especially STB, this first one remains the best. And up until the last few episodes of the season, it’s important to remember these missions were some of Kaz’s finest moments this year.

It also marked our first time off-world as Kaz and Poe travel to Sector Six to investigate a distress call after some training exercises. The rendezvous with Poe high in sky on Castilon is some of the best cinematography of the season.

They get more than they bargained for with a ship full of Kowakian monkey-lizards, but the true purpose of the episode is revealed when they discover Synara San passed out in a crate. They bring her back to the station and that in itself would have a huge impact on the rest of the season and beyond.

This also marks the first appearance of my new favorite droid, CB-23, the ball-droid that would eventually replace BB-8 as Kaz’s partner on Colossus. She and BB-8 have a few really sweet and funny moments, revealing a kinship and thoughtfulness between the two ball-droids.

This episode has everything I want in a Star Wars series, action, adventure, intrigue, aliens, droids, risk, world-building, etc. It paces very well and effortlessly slides right into place, you could almost write the opening few minutes of the next episode yourself, it leaves you that prepared.

Episode 08 – “Synara’s Score”

“On a mission to repair a vital platform defense, Kaz befriends the mysterious Synara and comes under attack by pirates.”

The show works best when all are involved in the story and this episode exemplifies that big time. But two stars shine very bright in this episode, Synara San and Tamara Ryvora. We get a really great example of character building with these two, learning a lot about each other’s past and motivations. Character details that are important as they would affect each other’s future decisions (Tam!).

The pirate attack is a very impressive action piece, one of the best of the year as we get parallel sequences, Kaz and Jarek working together repairing a targeting computer, and Tam and Synara fending off pirates at the docks. This is all of course orchestrated by the First Order, giving us a glimpse of things to come from them and their arrangement with the pirates.

Tam gets to shine brightest here, not only getting that character work we mentioned, but her willingness to rush to Synara’s aid and taking out a few pirates is impressive stuff. It also lays the foundation for how important friendship is to her, and the sting of betrayal she feels later. I’m looking forward to seeing how the show deals with Synara finding out Tam has gone over (temporarily) to the other side.

From a foreshadowing standpoint, we get a nice bit from Orka and Flix, hinting about what’s lurking underneath the platform and to top it off, Flix calling Kaz an idiot!

Next episode – “The Platform Classic”

Star Wars Resistance

Episode 16 – “The First Order Occupation”

“Kaz scrambles to help Synara escape the platform as the First Order sends a contingent of Stormtroopers to hunt a spy.”

This episode was a strong one simply because it wasn’t consumed with galactic implications or tying into the films. It was free to be its own show based on its own characters and motivations. All the stars in this episode are born of this show, including First Order Commander Pyre. So, once we get past the events in The Force Awakens, this is a good indicator of what the show will look like going forward.

The only character that connects to the larger picture is BB-8, but I suspected the scene where Kaz sent him to go look after Neeku was entirely deliberate, turns out it was.

The images were sharp, the writing strong, and the smooth editing allowed for perfect pacing from start to finish. And the score by Michael Tavera was playful, mischievous and emotive, his best of the season.

This episode took place over a very short period, which gave it a real-time vibe, something I marveled in at the time, and still do. Again, whatever your impressions of the show are, you can’t deny that its paced very well each week.
Synara’s eventual escape and return to Kragan sets up one of my favorite and nicest looking bits of the year and has the most Disney-esque quality of the season.

Previous episode – “The Doza Dilemma”
Next episode – “The New Trooper”

Star Wars Resistance

Episode 20 – “Descent”

“With secrets exposed, Yeager’s crew must evade relentless troopers hunting them down and find a way to reach the Resistance.”

One of the great things about this season was the run it went on after the mid-season break, pumping out 11 good if not great episodes in a row starting with “Bibo”

Like the two-part finale, Episode 20 called “Descent” had everything going for it. The writing was incredibly efficient, the pacing was airtight, the acting some of the best of the season, and conception and execution of the episode's specific plot is dynamic.

We saw Commander Pyre and the First Order impose more control over the station, pushing many to their breaking points. And we are introduced to the season’s most effective character, Agent Tierny of the First Order Security Bureau. Like Thrawn’s introduction in Star Wars Rebels, Tierny would prove to be one of the season’s most interesting characters with limited screen time. She only has an upside going into the second season.

Kaz faced his toughest decision to date but comes out swinging as the children from Tehar along with the Chelidae get involved. But the highlight came at the end where not only do we see the return of Kragan, Synara and the pirates, but an emotional plea from General Organa as well. A powerful ending that capped a great episode.

Previous episode – “The Disappeared”
Next episode - "No Escape: Part 1"

Star Wars Resistance

Episodes 21/22 – “No Escape: Part 1 & 2”

“Kaz, Neeku, Torra devise a plan to free their friends, but it’s upended when Kaz bears witness to the full might of the First Order”

“With Neeku’s help, Kaz comes up with a risky plan to rid the Colossus of the First Order once and for all.”

Cheating a bit here with two episodes but they are essentially one, right?

I’m sorry but the staff saved the best for last this season with a two-part finale that tops the list for me. This episode checks a lot of boxes as far as season finales go and not only did it wrap up a couple of threads from this season but dropped on us a heavy load of possibilities for Season Two.

Kaz became the leader Colossus needed him to be, Captain Doza finally took a stand, Yeager got back behind the wheel (or pilot stick) and Tam left with the First Order. And while we don’t know exactly what that means yet for her, we do know the second season will start off with Tam hanging around the bad guys. And oh yeah, the Colossus took off into hyperspace!

The end of the season tied wonderfully into the events from the Force Awakens but didn’t rely on it to carry the show forward. Rather, it simply coexists with it, reminding us that the threats the Frist Order imposes on the galaxy are far reaching.

To top it off, the show sets up what could be Star Wars’ version of Lost in Space or Voyager by having the Colossus leave the planet with everyone on board.

This finale did exactly what it’s supposed to do, leave us with more questions than answers and more importantly, wanting more.
