Rumor: Disney Actually Eyeing December Release For Episode VII

Posted by Eric on August 19, 2013 at 12:59 PM CST

Walt Disney Studios chairman Alan Horn may have said just this month at D23 that Star Wars Episode VII will be released in the summer of 2015, but Badass Digest is claiming that Disney has been considering moving the film to December. Multiple anonymous sources told BD's Devin Faraci that Disney is now planning for December, "with a mid-month release -- the 15th -- being most likely."

Apart from affording director J.J. Abrams and his team a few more months to tie up loose ends on Episode VII, moving the film from the summer to the holiday season would also leave Disney's Avengers sequel, Age of Ultron, with less competition for box office dollars. Conversely, decoupling these two top-tier releases would free up more attention and publicity for Episode VII when it hits theaters.

Right now, this is just a rumor, and it's unlikely that Disney will backtrack from its D23 posture so quickly. Stay tuned and we'll keep you updated as we hear more.
