Rumor: Digital Distribution For TCW Bonus Content, Ep. VII News, Rebels Episodes

Posted by Eric on August 28, 2013 at 07:58 AM CST

Jedi News is reporting that Disney is planning to create a channel for the Apple TV home-entertainment device that will provide access to a variety of Star Wars content.

"A Disney branded app for Star Wars will launch on Apple TV devices, with plans to distribute the final Clone Wars episodes exclusively digitally only through the Apple TV device for a limited period of time. This will happen in this holiday season.

In 2014, plans are in an early stage to use the platform to deliver SW7 production news 'live' from the sets, followed with Star Wars Rebels in late 2014 taking us all the way through to SW7 release."
Let's break this down. The rumor seems to be that The Clone Wars bonus content will be exclusive to this Star Wars channel (channels are equivalent to apps on Apple TV) for a limited time, and that Episode VII news and some kind of Rebels content will also be on the app, but not necessarily exclusively.

Jedi News' source added:
"Distribution will only be on Apple TV devices capable of running iOS7 and there has been no confirmation if the same app will be available to other iOS devices such as iPad or iPhone."
Jedi News notes that this seems to exclude the first-generation Apple TV (pictured here), because it may not be able to run iOS7, Apple's latest mobile operating system. Additionally, this Apple TV channel will not necessarily translate into a traditional iOS app for iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch devices.

I can't figure out why Disney would want to make the highly-anticipated TCW bonus content exclusive to a platform that is only in about 13 million households (only 6.5 million of which have the compatible model). They could easily put all of this content exclusively on a revamped version of Hyperspace and get far more buy-in.

Jedi News' source may not be entirely correct. As tech news site Engadget points out, Disney launched two Apple TV channels yesterday, one for their main TV channel and one for Disney XD. Instead of launching a separate channels and giving it exclusive access to certain Star Wars content, Disney may instead use its existing channels to distribute that content alongside airings on their traditional cable channels.

It's also worth pointing out that Tracy over at Club Jade sees this rumored Apple TV channel tying into rumblings that she's heard about "a big multi-media/app project in the works." If Disney has plans to release exclusives on StarWars.com, iOS and Android mobile apps, and an Apple TV channel, that would allow far more people to access the content.
