Industrial Light & Magic Launches ILM TV!

The Mandalorian

Industrial Light & Magic, the film visual effects and animation house founded in 1975 by George Lucas, will now enter the streaming and episodic television market with the launch of ILM TV.

Variety is reporting that the new division's first project for Lucasfilm will be the Star Wars live-action series from Jon Favreau, “The Mandalorian", which is expected to debut with the Disney streaming service at the end of next year.

Of course, every Star Wars fan knows what ILM has meant to the franchise, since the visual effects that were such a huge part of the saga going back to 1977 had to be invented by a small group of special effects wizards, most notably John Dykstra. As a result, Lucas would form ILM and would summarily change the film industry forever, playing a part in creating and innovating the technology that would be used in nearly every genre film over the next 40 years.

Rob Bredow, executive creative director and head of ILM, had this to say...

“It’s not often you get to create a new division at Industrial Light & Magic. We are seeing a real convergence in our creative approach used on films and in our immersive entertainment division ILMxLAB, and now we’re proud to be able to offer these ILM innovations in a way that’s suitable for streaming and television work to creatives around the world.”

With Disney and Lucasfilm going full speed ahead into the streaming and television galaxy, it makes sense ILM would have a separate division overseeing those projects. If anything, this should show us that we can expect to see a lot more content aimed at those avenues in the future.

Stay tuned as more information comes in!
