After nearly 20 years of development, a new space combat simulator called Fate of the Galaxy based on the Star Wars universe has been made available as a free download for Windows, Linux or Mac systems. It was created by passionate fans and is not an official Star Wars release, but it looks & plays incredibly well and really brings you back to the original Star Wars: X-Wing days.

From ModDB.com:

Overview
Fate of the Galaxy (FotG) is a free total conversion set in the Original Trilogy developed using the open-source FSO game engine (the game FreeSpace 2 is not required). Our goal is to deliver starfighter combat that captures the look and feel of the Original Trilogy. This includes fast ships and highly potent weapons, along with a focus on maneuverability and staying alive by working as a squadron. We've fine-tuned countless elements for movie authenticity (more than we can list) so the best way to experience it is to jump in and play!

Gameplay Features
• Choose to play as a pilot for the Rebel Alliance, the Galactic Empire, or as an independent privateer. Play interconnected story campaigns, customizable dynamic campaigns that span across the galaxy, arcade and training scenarios, single stand-alone-missions, and even quick multiplayer matches on LAN.
• Tune the game to suit your own style with multiple customization and difficulty settings. Playing with multiple joysticks? The game supports using up to four separate devices for controls. Playing with just a mouse and keyboard? Use the in-game toggle to allow your mouse to make wide sweeping turns in maneuver-mode then switch back to aiming-mode to land precise shots. Other options include playing in VR or using head tracking. Multiple game settings allow for a wide range of playstyles and experiences, from more casual to more sim-like.
• Build your own custom missions using the full power of the mission editor FRED, which was used to create all the missions in Fate of the Galaxy. We even have a manual for anyone interested. Missions are just text-based files so you can easily share them, too.
• Experience game visuals that are meticulously tuned to the Original Trilogy, with all assets made by humans only. All effects and models have also been highly optimized to support battles that run smoothly on PC, Linux, and Mac. Even players that do not have a dedicated graphics card can still play the game smoothly if they adjust a few graphics options. Fate of the Galaxy also supports playing in VR if you own a headset.
• Enjoy many, many more features and content, including 64+ ships, fully working cockpits, customizable weapon loadout configurations, ability to command your wingmen, and much more (far too long to list here). Our Game Manual has extensive instructions with guides and tips, but you’ll likely just have to play Fate of the Galaxy yourself to really see what the game offers!
