David Tennant Wins Emmy For The Clone Wars Guest Role, In A First For The Series

Doctor Who's David Tennant, who voiced the Jedi training droid Huyang on Star Wars: The Clone Wars, won the Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Performer in an Animated Program at the 40th Annual Daytime Entertainment Creative Arts Emmy Awards last night, earning The Clone Wars its first Emmy win in the series' five-year history.

The Clone Wars was also nominated in three other categories, but it did not win those awards.
  • Outstanding Directing in an Animated Program: Dave Filoni (Supervising Director), Kyle Dunlevy, Brian Kalin O'Connell, Steward Lee, and Bosco Ng (Directors) (lost to Dan Vs.)
  • Outstanding Achievement in Sound Mixing - Animation: David Acord (Re-Recording Mixer) and Cameron Davis (Dialogue Recordist) (lost to Ben 10: Omniverse)
  • Outstanding Achievement in Music Direction and Composition: Kevin Kiner (lost to The Fresh Beat Band)

While last night's event was specifically for the Creative Arts categories and was not broadcast, The Clone Wars will be up for a final Daytime Emmy, Outstanding Special Class Animated Program, on Sunday, June 16th at 8pm ET, at the televised Daytime Emmy Awards. HLN TV will broadcast the event.

Executive producer George Lucas, producer Cary Silver, and line producer Athena Portillo are listed in the nomination for this top-tier animation award. Early this morning, after leaving the Creative Arts event, Lucasfilm publicist Tracy Cannobbio announced that George Lucas will be attending Sunday's award show to accept the Emmy on behalf of The Clone Wars.

Because Jim Cummings (as Hondo Ohnaka) and Sam Witwer (as Maul) were also nominated in the category of Outstanding Performer in an Animated Program along with Tennant, The Clone Wars received a total of seven Daytime Emmy nominations (including the award that will be presented on Sunday). The Clone Wars received more nominations than all but eight of the other programs at last night's event.

Tennant's win is a big accomplishment for an animated series that has received relatively few major awards since it premiered in 2008. Congratulations to David Tennant for his masterful (and now Emmy Award-winning) performance as Huyang. We'll be looking forward to Sunday night and the possibility of another major win for The Clone Wars.
