A Quick Thought On Star Wars Rebels

Posted by Chris on October 8, 2014 at 11:00 AM CST

My TFN colleague, Eric Geller, wrote a fascinating piece on a portion of the Star Wars fandom who intend to "save" the Expanded Universe, now known as "Legends," from its long-overdue fate. Eric also discusses fans who plan to boycott Star Wars Rebels and therefore ignore the now solidified canon storyline. After viewing the premiere, as well as the first episode, I can conclude that as a Star Wars fan, ignoring Rebels would prove to be a regrettable decision.

Ever since the first teaser trailer premiered for Star Wars Rebels, expectations for it varied. Fans were afraid to see what the first official Disney-influenced Star Wars product would look like, and for good reason. It didn't help that The Clone Wars was a victim to mixed reception from the fandom; I myself found The Clone Wars to be rather bland during its original run, and more like filler than an actual contribution to the saga (that opinion has changed now, however). There was always a chance that Rebels would fall into that same hole. But now that the show has officially premiered to the masses, all I have to say about it are two simple words: watch it.

Star Wars Rebels, despite being deemed as a kids show, is a thrill to watch for any age group. It took the positives of its predecessor, added a new bit of flair to it, and the end result is nothing short of brilliant. The art style fits, the characters are already likable and relatable a mere two stories in, and there are aspects of the show that will capture the heart of any viewer despite the generation they grew up in. Composer Kevin Kiner also managed to keep that vintage Star Wars sound with the score while still managing to add in his own influence. Overall, both of the released adventures felt genuine, taken care of, and with the fans in mind.

So if you are one of those who are weary about Star Wars Rebels, please don't be. Never before has a show managed to grab me and pull me in as much as this. Do yourself a favor and sit down and watch Rebels, especially if you have a family, because I guarantee that you will be missing out on something truly special and worthy of being a part of the Star Wars saga if you don't.

Also, don't forget to catch Eric's reviews of each episode as well as the discussion on the Rebels Roundtable!
