Thirty years ago I was 10 years old living on Mather Air Force Base in Sacramento, California. I'm sure we didn't see it exactly on opening day but I do remember my first viewing. I went with a friend down the street named Jimmy Thomas. His Dad had volunteered to take us to an afternoon viewing. As we were leaving the military base, an alert came through and the base was on lockdown. They literally closed the gate right in front of us, we couldn't leave. So when we did arrive to the theatre we had missed the first ten minutes! We were still excited to see it and quickly found some empty seats. The movie was fantastic! All our heroes returned to beat the bad guys! The space battles were amazing! It all was amazing!
That summer I remember talking my mother into buying some old hockey helmets at a yard sale. Jimmy and I painted them army green and we were instant Endor rebels! The blanket and lawn chair fort out back was our base and we were determined to wipe out the Empire! I miss those days, and I have no idea where Jimmy Thomas ended up. It's great that we still have these movies and the memories they've created over the years. I've always loved Return of the Jedi, have you?
