STAR WARS

Star Wars News This Week

We take a look back at some of the Star Wars news that was hitting the web this past week...

Ewan McGregor on a Star Wars’ Obi-Wan Kenobi film – there’s “no plans” to do it…

With an Obi-Wan Kenobi standalone film fading into obscurity, Ewan McGregor it seems will never stop being asked about potentially playing Ben Kenobi should the film actually make it to production.

Recently, McGregor stopped by The View to promote his latest film “Christopher Robin” and of course was asked about playing the Jedi Master…

“I would totally do it, of course,” the actor shared when asked about returning to the series. “There’s no plans as such to do it, as far as I know.”

It’s definitely not a secret that McGregor would welcome the opportunity to don the Jedi robe again as he’s stated as much several times the last few years. And in spite of recent shooting location rumors and an appearance on the Solo: A Star Wars Story red carpet, it seems any Kenobi anthology film is in a galaxy far, far away. He did acknowledge that the time period between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope is fertile ground as far as potential stories are concerned…

"There must be a good story to tell as they're doing spin-offs – there's likely to be a good Obi-Wan [story] between maybe me and Alec Guinness in that time. I’ve answered yes so many times that it looks like I’m touting for work at Disney’s door.”

More recently we’ve heard a rumor that McGregor will spend a couple of days with J.J. Abrams on set filming a scene for Episode IX. If it’s true, then an Obi-Wan Kenobi Force Ghost may indeed be in our future. Here’s hoping we get that and more.

The WASP

The WASP originally reached out about playing Leia in Star Wars: The Force Awakens

Back before The Force Awakens cast was announced there were many rumored names floating around Hollywood who could potentially have roles in the brand new Star Wars films. There were so many big names being thrown around it was hard to keep track for a while as it seemed everyone wanted to be a part of history. As it turns out one of those actors hoping for a role was Evangeline Lilly who had just come off huge success in J.J. Abrams popular TV series, LOST. It turns out before Carrie Fisher’s name was mentioned as a possible returnee, Lilly had her sights set on Fisher’s iconic role of Princess Leia Organa.

At Boston Fan Expo recently she revealed that once J.J. Abrams was announced as director, she reached to her former boss’s producing partner requesting that if there’s a part for Leia, she should get some consideration. Lilly revealed that she had “never requested anything ever before,” but she had one request for Abrams and his team on The Force Awakens: “I wanna be Leia! Make me Leia!”

Obviously J.J. Abrams and Lucasfilm went in a different direction bringing back the old players to return to their iconic roles, mixing them in with fresh young faces. As for Lilly, I’d say she’s done pretty well for herself hitching her horse to Disney’s other flagship property Marvel, landing the role of Hope Van Dyne aka The WASP, alongside Paul Rudd in the Ant-Man series.

Luke Skywalker TLJ

Mark Hamill says there are many, untold chapters in the life of Luke Skywalker…

With the years between Return of the Jedi and The Force Awakens still largely unexplored, one character who has had the least amount of attention during those 30 years is Jedi Master Luke Skywalker. Sure we’ve had several novels letting us in on what certain parts of the galaxy were up to, but none have focused on Luke’s journey.

Recently on Twitter, when asked by a fan if Hamill every thought about Luke finding love, he had this to say…

Despite many elements of the Expanded Universe being brought into canon, one that seems likely to never see daylight is that of Skywalker’s relationship with Galactic reformer Mara Jade, herself a powerful Force wielder. The two were married in the Legends books and even had a son, Ben Skywalker after her fall from the Empire.

With the death of Luke Skywalker in Rian Johnson’s The Last Jedi, obviously the time has passed for a Mark Hamill version of the character to go down that path. But, who’s to say Lucasfilm won’t one day tell that story in a different format using a different timeline?

I wouldn’t hold your breath however on Jade and Ben showing up since both of their absences would have to be explained and Lucasfilm doesn’t seem willing to go there. Not yet anyways.

Till next time...MTFBWY.
