George Lucas, Kathleen Kennedy Visit Lucasfilm's Singapore 'Sandcrawler'

Posted by Eric on January 16, 2014 at 01:04 PM CST

Way back in 2011, we wrote about how Lucasfilm planned to construct a sandcrawler-like post-production facility in Singapore. This week, that facility officially opened for business. Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy, her predecessor George Lucas, and Singapore's Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong toured the facility during its launch.

The 242,190-square-foot building features "a Yoda fountain, a 100-seat theater, and state-of-the-art digital production capabilities," according to CNBC. Visual effects artists there are already at work on movies like Transformers: Age Of Extinction and Avengers: Age of Ultron.

"This is a very robust operation that is comparable to exactly what we're doing in San Francisco or Vancouver," Kennedy told reporters.

You can check out press accounts of the facility's launch from The Hollywood Reporter, Metro News, Reuters, The Straits Times, CNBC, and Singapore's TODAY newspaper. The Straits Times, CNBC, and TODAY articles also include video reports.

Jesse Hildreth, a Lighting and Compositing Artist at Industrial Light & Magic working at the Singapore facility, tweeted the following photos of Lucas, Kennedy, and Lee's visit on opening day.
