Official Press Release:

PORTRAIT OF THE MANDALORIAN AND THE CHILD UNVEILED IN COLLABORATION WITH
NATIONAL PORTRAIT GALLERY

— New portrait unveiled as the second season of Emmy award-winning series The Mandalorian launches on Disney+ tomorrow (30th October) —

LONDON, U.K. (29th October, 2020) — An exclusive portrait titled ‘The Mandalorian and the Child’ has been unveiled at a display in London in collaboration with the National Portrait Gallery, to mark the arrival of the highly anticipated second season of Lucasfilm’s The Mandalorian on Disney+.

The painting honours two characters: The Mandalorian and the Child who have become global icons, following the release of the Disney+ Original series The Mandalorian earlier this year.

The 3ft by 2ft oil portrait will hang alongside some of the National Portrait Gallery’s own collection of portraits of familiar faces from the Star Wars galaxy, including Sir Alec Guinness, Thandie Newton, Felicity Jones, Ben Morris, Riz Ahmed and Gareth Edwards. The display will also include original concept art from The Mandalorian created by extraordinary artists such as Doug Chiang, John Park and Christian Alzman.

The display will be available to view via a free-ticketed event, from Friday 30th October and Saturday 31st October.

Luke Bradley-Jones, Senior Vice President at Disney+, said: “This is truly the way to mark the arrival of the second season of The Mandalorian. We are honoured to unveil this portrait in collaboration with the esteemed National Portrait Gallery. The show and characters created by Jon Favreau have been embraced by fans across the UK who can now stand a step closer to inspect them on canvas before streaming the new episodes.

Ros Lawler, Chief Operating Officer at National Portrait Gallery, comments: “There is no doubt that Star Wars is a cultural phenomenon that has had a huge impact on popular culture and has involved a wide range of talent from across the British film industry. We are delighted to have worked with Disney+ on the Star Wars display, which includes the painting of ‘The Mandalorian and the Child’. We hope that this unique collaboration between the Gallery and Disney+ will encourage new audiences and young people to our Collection, allowing them to come face to face with their Star Wars heroes.

Showrunner Jon Favreau serves as executive producer along with Dave Filoni, Kathleen Kennedy and Colin Wilson, with Karen Gilchrist and Carrie Beck serving as co-executive producers.

The Mandalorian is set after the fall of the Empire and before the emergence of the First Order. The first season followed the travails of a lone gunfighter in the outer reaches of the galaxy far from the authority of the New Republic. In the highly anticipated second season, the Mandalorian and the Child will continue their journey, facing enemies and rallying allies as they make their way through a dangerous galaxy in the tumultuous era after the collapse of the Galactic Empire.

Disney+ is proud to support the Young People’s Programme at the National Portrait Gallery and, as part of the scheme; members of the Youth Forum assisted the curatorial team in creating the captions for the display. Aimed at 14-21 year olds, the Young People’s Programme is vibrant and inclusive, and encourages young people to get involved in art and portraiture.

This portrait will be on display to the general public from Friday 30th October until Saturday 31st October at The Unit, 40 Earlham St, West End, London WC2H 9LH. People should register their interest in a free ticket to the display by contacting gallery@wdwentertainment.com
