Fortune Shares First Official Photo of Millennium Falcon

Posted by Eric on December 29, 2014 at 01:32 PM CST

You've already seen a short video of it and then a brief appearance in the teaser, but now you can see the first official photo of the Millennium Falcon as it will appear in Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

The image comes to us courtesy of Fortune magazine, which put Disney CEO Bob Iger on the cover of its latest issue for his transformation of the Walt Disney Company. After a request from Fortune, Industrial Light & Magic crafted this shot of Iger standing in front of the Falcon.
Lucasfilm’s special effects division, Industrial Light & Magic (ILM), worked with Fortune to create both the cover and opening photograph in the story, an inside look at the innovative technologies used across Disney’s diverse businesses and brands. The collaboration started with our photo shoot with CEO Iger earlier this month in New York. The photos were then turned over to ILM to, well, work their magic. Not surprisingly, the secretive division was mum about the exact process for creating the realistic shot of Iger standing right on set, casually leaning against a chunk of metal (the image seen in the opening pages of the story).
"According to ILM," Fortune says, "the fabled ship was rendered in wireframe form (a skeletal version) as well as a more layered 'textured render,' which were combined in Photoshop to create the final image."

You can read the Fortune cover story on Iger here.
