Star Wars: The Mandalorian - The Art & Imagery Collector's Edition Volume 1 explores the amazing world of Star Wars: The Mandalorian, collecting the stunning artwork from the first four chapters of the Disney+ smash hit, highlighting the characters, creatures, allies, enemies and environments of this all-new Star Wars story. The publication from Titan Magazines will be on sale beginning September 29 and will be available as a hardcover, a softcover, and there is also an exclusive cover available through comic stores.
Having watched the first season of The Mandalorian
in its entirety just once, and with several months going by since seeing the last episode, I was eager to see how this book stacked up to my memory of the imagery from the show. The cover page is certainly a great first image to draw you in and flip through it. The first few pages show several images of Din Djarin and are intermixed with the table of contents and acknowledgements. From there, the imagery contained within the book sets you on the visual journey of the first four chapters of Season 1. My initial reaction to flipping through the book was simply “Wow” and wanting to keep turning the pages.
Within the book, there are chapters dedicated to The Mandalorian, The Child, Mandalorians on Navarro, Worlds, Allies and Enemies, Creatures, and it concludes with Battles. The book is heavy on images and does not rely on words to tell the narrative, rather Titan Magazines leaves that to the imagery and artistry.
Being a fan of the ending credits of each episode where they would share the artistic concept renderings related to that episode, this book does not disappoint and is heavy in this area. It has a mix of conceptual images, photography from the show and poster stylings similar to what you may find with Artist Alley at Star Wars
Celebration. The photographs depicted in the book are crisp and capture detail that makes you appreciate the show’s attention to detail even more.
The pages showcasing the poster stylings of specific characters were the nicest surprise included. Titan Magazines makes good use of the two-page inlays within the book to dedicate to one image that further captures the excitement from the show. There are a couple of great images of The Mandalorian and IG-11 nestled within the pages in the Allies and Enemies chapter.
Comic Store Edition
If you are a fan of the artistry involved in concept designs (thinking of you Ralph McQuarrie), this book is a must have. The pages invoked feelings similar to seeing Ralph’s imagery and how he brought to life the ideas that we have come to know as Star Wars
. Star Wars: The Mandalorian - The Art & Imagery Collector’s Edition Volume 1
is a book worthy of sitting on top of any coffee table.
Be sure to look for Volume 2 due out November 24th, 2020.
