SPY REPORT: Extra Diary Part VII Posted By Joshua on June 17, 2001
Timelord gives us this final look inside being an extra on Episode II. This is part seven, the others can be seen in our archives (1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6). Spoilers!
I'll finish now with some other interesting observations and experiences from the five days I was there. Each day that Natalie was to be on set I would see on the call sheet that she used a different name. I originally thought this may have been her double or stand-in, but soon realised that "Sophie Meare" was actually the name she used for the call sheet. On the same day Natalie was showing her parents around the set Hayden also had his family with him. I believe it was his parents and sister possibly that were there with him. Looking at the call sheet on a particular day I saw Ian McDiarmid was due in at 3 p.m. to Stage 2 for promotional reasons with Robin Gurland. As I was hoping to meet him at some stage I tried to go looking for him at that time. I took the chance, but wasn't awarded a meeting with him unfortunately.
Whilst walking around the lot you would see inside many of the soundstages and the sets they were building. I spoke to people about what they had seen the previous month, and they had said the best thing they saw was the Queen's apartments. It was said that tthese were constructed in Stage 1 I think from memory. Most of the time the sets are fairly ordinary when you see them close up, but she said the apartments were so magnificent it was a shame much of the detail would be missed on camera. I didn't see them personally, but they must have been good. Also for one of the more ornate gowns of the Queen, and whenever the wardrobe people would bring them out or handle them, they would have to use white cotton gloves. One of the things I did see personally was what appeared to be the cockpit of a well-known ship we all love, and I'm not talking the Falcon.
On the day of my wardrobe check as I was waiting to be fitted I saw a small pile of papers stapled together. As I looked what I saw was all of the main characters and a small photo of each along with their names and whether they were CG or not. This pricked my ears up and so I turned the page. As I did I quickly shut it as there were major spoilers. However I figured I'd seen that much, I may as well see it all. Well what did I see? I saw all the main characters along with others that are returning, Watto etc. I also saw what you've all now guessed, that is the identity of the mysterious boy. Apart from that though I also saw a lot of new CG characters that are appearing. I didn't recognise any of their names, but I did see there will be a new Dug and a few new characters from familiar species, Gasgano's I believe. As I kept turning I saw there will be new CG droids of types I have never seen before. The next few pages surprised me the most. I saw a photo of a new CG character that I didn't expect. I really didn't think it would appear at this stage, so it blew me out of the water.
After being fitted I was waiting to have my photo done when I saw a folder about 15 cm thick on a table with hundreds of photos taken from all four movies. Many of these are the photos of every character from the movies that we see in promotions and in behind the scenes stuff, but there were so many other photos that I have never seen anywhere. Different photos of all the Cantina aliens all the way through to the main characters (creatures) like Chewbacca up to The Phantom Menace. It was great to see and I was happily enjoying myself.
Also after we filmed the scene where we were ushered outside. This was an exciting moment as the people from 3D Imaging were there to pick the people out who will forever be immortalised in plastic. They chose who they wanted and took them up to a building somewhere around Building 36. It was here that they would be scanned by laser and their details entered into a computer so that Hasbro can later make action figures out of them.
Another small note was when we were with the sound guys watching Natalie on the screen. At one stage they were looking through still screens of some of the footage that has already been filmed. We saw shots of the Jedi Council including Samuel, Ki Adi etc, though I can't remember seeing Yoda but I can't be sure, he may have been there. I also saw what appeared to be that ship you have seen in the spy photos, the one you were comparing to a Star Destroyer. If it is the same ship, I can tell you it is a lot smaller, as it only had one pilot, quite visible from the outside. This looked to be on a large landing pad surrounded by blue screen.
As for the sets I had seen, I did see the yellow speeder you have spoken of mounted on the moveable gimble. This was in Stage 2 at the same end as the creature department. In the middle of Stage 2 was a large set which we saw frequently. It looked to me originally like a large stadium like the podrace arena except with a large round hole at on end made from wood. But on one particular day we got to walk through it and there was a model of the finished set placed right in the middle, with two of the characters placed there for reference. It is actually a large hangar with the hole being the entry and the part I thought was seating is actually a rockface. The ship that was to be put there I can best describe as looking like an insect. Though it hadn't yet been built. On the last day it had started to be constructed, though I never saw the finished product. Behind this set there was a raised set which I never saw get used. The floor of this set was probably 3m off the ground and whilst I can't be totally sure, the small part of the inside that I saw looked like the Queens ship. Other than those I did not see any other sets closely, but I could see that they were using every soundstage there was along with some of the other buildings. I would also see on my way in and out when walking from the car park to 44B quite a few props, but they were always under tarpaulins so I couldn't do more than make out shapes. A few looked like speeders, others I wasn't sure, though I think one was that large round object seen in the spy photos.
In 44B where wardrobe was they had photos of all the creatures on the wall along with their names. They also had a board with dates on it and the number of extras required. This would be quite interesting as you could see who was due to come. On one particular day we saw that they required a small group of Jedi children, and another day they required Tusken Raiders and also a child Tusken Raider which I thought was interesting.
Thanks so much to Timelord for these increadibly detailed spy reports and what a great opportunity to be an extra!
