SPY REPORT: Extra Diary Part VI Posted By Joshua on June 14, 2001
Timelord gives us this look inside of being an extra on Episode II. This is part six, the others can be seen in our archives (1, 2, 3, 4 and 5). There may be a few spoilers, so beware of the text you'll have to highlight below:
It was difficult to eat when George Lucas, Rick McCallum, Samuel L. Jackson, Nick Gillard and numerous other Lucasfilm heavyweights are no more than across the room. I couldn't hear anything they were saying, though it didn't seem to be anything more than casual talk. After lunch Nick was sitting outside talking to some extras.
Back up to Building 48 we sat back on the landing pad once again. They didn't seem to be using us much, so we had to entertain ourselves for quite a while. I got to talking to the other extras and a few of the other people working on the production. One guy looked a little distressed, and upon asking him why he said that his mate had just told him how the movie ended. I thought you too might like to know, so here it is...just kidding, sorry. I immediately said to him I didn't want to know, which he understood.
I did accidentally receive a few details, the major spoiler for me you have already alluded to on your site, but others I found interesting. He said that it wasn't a surprising ending as such, just a little unexpected for it's timeframe (sorry I'm trying to explain what he told me in a succinct form, I hope you're following). I also asked him what sort of ending it was, could we expect a SW or ROTJ ending or is it more like ESB. He said it was an Empire type finish, though it was still a very good finish, and we would like it.
When we got the next call on to set we went through past George and the monitors as opposed to going around the outside. The monitors he gets to look at are huge, and very impressive. This scene was basically a shot of the set filled with extras that look to make up some fill-in shots of crowd/aliens just going about their business. The centerpiece being on a group of Light Niktos involved in a game and then getting into a small disagreement with everyone else walking around the place. The interesting thing about the direction we were given was that we were told not to walk on a particular line. The reason for this was that there would be creatures placed in there digitally later on. This excited us as we were walking on the inside of the CG line and it was the first time we KNEW that if the shot made it through we would definitely be on screen. Very selfish, we know.
This shot was completed at about 6:30 p.m. and we then went outside and milled around for a while. Hayden was having a smoke for a while before a van pulled up. He and Natalie were then whisked away in the van to a destination unbeknown to us. That basically wrapped us for the day, so we all walked back to get changed and finish off for the day.
Day four: I was totally surprised to get this call, I didn't think I'd get another chance. The day started out the same as all the others before we were called to Stage 2. This scene involved about 40 extras with Natalie, Hayden and R2. It was filmed in the same place as where the street scene had been earlier. What was there now was a large landing pad with a blue screen at one end. The scene had Natalie and Hayden walking along with R2 in front. Hayden and Natalie were carrying bags and the dialogue was happy and lighthearted. The extras were all walking in the same direction some ahead and others behind. Halfway along the pad there was a gap before another pad was built. Between them there was a blue section about a foot wide. The two pads were joined by two or three small bridges. Whenever R2 had to cross these (they were raised) his feet would scrape on the pad. The technicians attempted to fix this numerous times, but there wasn't much they could do about it, so they just had to persist.
After that scene we went back out to the marquee and were getting worried because all the AD's and creature people were talking about wrapping a lot of the extras. We then had to sprint down to the set as they were already doing rehearsals. We got there and it appeared to be the same scene filmed from a different direction. I tried my best to get on camera as always, but I don't know whether I succeeded.
After that scene was done we had some lunch and were sent back to Building 44. I sat here for about another 5 hours watching other creatures get wrapped along with extras. I sat low and hid for all this time in the hope of getting called back on set, but it wasn't to be. So unfortunately after all that time we were all wrapped and sent on our way. Thus my SW experience ended on a slow uneventful note, though it wasn't an unhappy one.
What an opportunity, to be on set, to see all of the sights and sounds, to even possibly be in the movie. How exciting! And don't forget Timelord will give us one final roundup of their thoughts in the final part seven tomorrow!
Rebelscum Breast Cancer Awareness Charity Patch Posted By Philip on November 25, 2014: Thanks to everybody that ordered patches. I sent a check for $1,600.00 to the National Breast Cancer Foundation on Monday. While it's not as much as I hoped for, it's still very much appreciated. They will remain for sale in the store for anybody that still wishes to purchase them. Details after the jump.
