SPY REPORT: Extra Diary Part III Posted By Joshua on May 28, 2001
Timelord chimes in with part three of their extra diary (part one and two archived here) from the set of Episode II. Here's the start of Day Two, including more shooting on the Corusant sets. Spoilers below, so highlight to read:
Day two. Today and the next day were my two most enjoyable days. The visibility of each of the creature costumes varied widely, and on this day we filmed a nightclub scene. What I'll say about this scene is that it was absolutely astounding. The set was incredible, great detail and it looked awesome in general as well as on camera. As we walked into Stage 3 for this scene the monitors were right in front of us, it is extraordinary how you can look at a set in front of you and then look at the same set in widescreen on the monitors and see how much better it looks, just because it's on the screen. The bit of smoke you can see drifting around the set transforms the set into a smoke-filled nightclub worthy of SW.
For a man this scene was cruel, there were so many scantily clad females in various attire that one couldn't decide which way to look. With all the atmosphere and the plethora of beautiful girls one couldn't help but notice.
This was the first scene where I got to be one of the first in history to hear some brand new SW dialogue. All I will say is that this scene is certainly a beautiful "hommage" to the cantina scene in ANH. I can't wait to hear what the music from John Williams will be like for this scene. Also (maybe you can start an easter eggs page for EP II now) keep an eye out for some cameo appearances from some of our favourite and not so favourite characters from the world of SW (that's the actors themselves not their characters).
This scene again involved Anakin, Obi-Wan and Leeanna.
Usually you were asked to go outside while shots were reset, but I was somehow forgotten at one point and stayed inside for a while. This was fantastic as George came over and was talking with a Twi'lek at the bar, I was so close to having a chat myself, but chickened out. He is a small man, but very imposing on the set. It was still great to be so close.
I forgot to mention the wardrobe check I had to go and do for the previous scene and the one on the following day. We were called in to the marquee which stood behind building 44 for a time whilst they were filming in 44. I was happily sitting there waiting for my turn to be fitted, just talking to the wardrobe people and AD's when I realized that Anthony Daniels had moved to the back of the tent. I overheard him saying that after the uncomfortable early days of wearing the costume, they have now got donning and doffing the costume down to a fine art. It only takes them 20 minutes now, before he said it would take several hours.
Natalie Portman was being shuttled around in one of the many golf buggies they had to drive around the sets. Inside the set of building 44 as it has already been recognised via the George Lucas Select photo was the Lars homestead. This was aso our first sighting of the legendary little droid himself, R2-D2. He was on set and there was also another head outside on a trolley. There were gasps of delight and wonder despite the fact he was static at the time.
From there we went down to lunch, I was happily going about my business of grabbing a plate, when I noticed Mace Windu (Samuel Jackson) eating as well. Also getting their lunch was Ki Adi Mundi, complete in Jedi Council make-up and the Member of the council whose name escapes me, but is the one with the mechanical breathing apparatus on their face. Obviously this was missing while they were eating though.
I guess for the Jedi it was time to eat as well.
Rebelscum Breast Cancer Awareness Charity Patch Posted By Philip on November 25, 2014: Thanks to everybody that ordered patches. I sent a check for $1,600.00 to the National Breast Cancer Foundation on Monday. While it's not as much as I hoped for, it's still very much appreciated. They will remain for sale in the store for anybody that still wishes to purchase them. Details after the jump.
