Who owns that ship in the Ep. II Select Picture?

Posted By Roderick on November 24, 2000

The Virtual Edition posted some speculation about the mysterious new spaceship we see in the latest Episode II Select Picture (#20). Here's a quote from the article - you can read the rest here.

[Spoilers! - highlight to read]
"I think of Count Dooku as the possible owner of the ship. Look at the color of the engines: green. Now who else had a ship with green engine lights in the Prequel Trilogy? Exactly, Lord Maul. Just a coincidence? We know that Count Dooku is rumored to be actually a Sith Lord by the name of Darth Tyranus. And a Sith Lord deserves his own vessel, don't you think? So could we be looking at Darth Tyranus' spaceship entering hyperspace? Hmmm..."

UPDATE: This in from Adam L:

I believe the ship isn't an evolution of the Sith Interceptor, but rather something like the Radiant VII, perhaps halfway between a Republic Cruiser and a Blockade Runner. Compare the Radiant VII in Episode I to the Select picture:

The engines are identical.... they appear green, but this could be because of the weird lighting of the star tunnel thing (what happened to hyperspace lines?) or perhaps a trick be Ben Burtt to stir up controversy... or perhaps a change in the ship... still, I believe the engine color is a coincidence, and it is really an evolution of Republic/Rebel ships.

UPDATE:Check out this cleared up image from Derek:

YET ANOTHER UPDATE: what if you turn the picture upside down?

'FirsLast' chimes in with this very interesting observation: "First and foremost, I think Lucasfilm is sending out at least the latest selects AFTER they have been deliberately digitally altered so that they can watch us try to dig out the Easter Eggs they may or may have not put in them. That aside, I took a very close look at the newest select... ...and found nothing. However, when I used to sketch out spacecraft and what-not, there was the inevitable, "Hey, that looks more cool UPSIDE DOWN." Now, a common principle factor of most Star Wars space craft is the fact that they can LAND. One look at this ship in the Select configuration tells me that with whatever it is protruding from bottom of it - it cannot land. So...I flipped it over and suddenly it looked like a Republic cruiser with a topside modification to it."

Here's a picture of the ship turned 180 degrees. It's true, the construction makes more sense this way. This ship could actually land. But does it look like a Republic Cruiser? The vertical 'spine' or whatever it is looks really huge when compared to the rest of the ship... Any inside sources who'd care to shed some light on all this? Your comments are welcome as always :)

So just what is it? Share your thoughts about this ship in this Jedi Council Forums Thread
