The Bad Mother - Part II Posted By Scott on October 22, 2000
Our earlier article on Lucas' quote about good and bad mothers in Star Wars generated a lot of response. Besides the suggestion that Mace Windu was the bad mother (shut yo mouth!), the following was sent in by serge:
Didn't I read somewhere (I thought it was on your site, but I may be wrong) about an interview or some such where Lucas indicated that the good mother-bad mother theme had been used in Willow? I don't remember it too clearly, but the inference I drew from it was that the whole idea seemed to have been dismissed as a subject for the prequels.
Then there's the following from Rich:
I'm a student at the University of Southern California (Lucas's alma mater). Last spring, I took a film class called the Star Wars Phenomenon. Toward the end of the class, Frank Darabont, Lawrence Kasdan, and George Lucas came in to talk with us in a question and answer session. On girl in the audience asked Lucas if he would put more strong female characters in Star Wars so there would be more role models for girls, or even something like an evil woman character. Lucas's response was "I don't do evil chicks." So, I don't know what exactly we will see in the prequels of a bad mother. Perhaps a mysterious bounty hunter (Aurra Sing) is as bad as it gets.
