The Art of Episode II Preview Posted By Joshua on April 18, 2002
An insider sent us a preview of the Art of Episode II book. This is one of the most anticipated upcoming titles, showing the evolution of costumes, creatures and so much more. Here's what we've got:
The Genosians were inspired by concept art of the original Episode I Neimoudians. George wanted to go back and revisit the idea of the alien creators looking similar to the droids.
The rogas, Genosian crab-like creatures, were inspired from real life crabs and are depicted trying to nest in R2 in original concept art. In the final sculpt, we see them looking more like a termite face with fangs and bug-like eyes.
The look for the Tusken child seemed to come easily, with some of the first artwork looking like the final production costume. Artwork of the Tusken mother is shown in early concepts, with traditional round Tusken eye sockets instead of the thin eyepiece in the final headpiece. The Tusken mothers were heavily referenced from Iraqi nomadic women.
Early art for the Genosians varied widely. Some of them look more like bats, and you can see through their wings in most of the artwork. In several poses the wings are wrapped around them completely, much like a bat's wings as opposed to the final more dragonfly-like wings selected.
The Tusken camp was directed to have about 100 settlers, a small pond and faybos (small Tatooine creatures). The pond was realized to provide both drinking water and a source for mud to build shelters.
The massiff creature was originally designed as the orray (the Genosian picadors ride them into the arena). During the design evolution, they added spikes and scarey eyes and it became a wild creature that attacks Obi-Wan on the ledges of Geonosis.
