Star Wars Connections Article from GenCon

Posted By Thomas on August 5, 2001

Dan Gomoll finds a Star Wars report from GenCon on a local news site, jsonline.com:

... Sansweet said the new film will answer many questions posed by the previous films, "some in completely unexpected ways." He said that "connections are made" between characters and events from the original trilogy and from "Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace," "but assumptions are turned upside down."

The new film will be set about 10 years later than "Episode I." It stars Hayden Christensen as the 19-year-old Anakin Skywalker, who becomes the evil Darth Vader in the original films and is father of Luke and Princess Leia. The new film will start that evolution.

"It will show Anakin Skywalker beginning to deal with anger, hatred, a sense of loss, possessiveness and jealousy," Sansweet said. Natalie Portman returns as Queen Amidala, Luke and Leia's mother, and Ewan McGregor returns as Obi-Wan Kenobi. The new film will introduce a wedge-shaped shuttle craft whose design is "unmistakable and ominous," and a precursor of the evil empire battleship in the original film, Sansweet said.

The unpopular computer-generated character Jar Jar Binks from "Episode I" also will return, Sansweet added, "however, he does not have the same size role as in 'Episode I.' "

Sansweet blamed the media for creating the hype and high expectations that surrounded "Episode I" and promised that the marketing of "Episode 2" will be more subdued. "We don't want this to be so in your face that it's overkill," he said.

"Star Wars: Episode 2" is scheduled for release on May 22, 2002.
