SPY REPORT: Why Tatooine Again?

Posted By Joshua on July 17, 2000

An insider name Aapac scored some information about the character of Jedi Council member Ki-Adi-Mundi, actor Silas Carson. According to sources, the actor has already been spotted in Sydney as much as a week ago! Ki-Adi-Mundi is set to return in Episode II (as also confirmed by the Official Site recently).

In other prequel news, they also chime in with this possible plot point of the prequels. It is definitely spoiler material if accurate, so be warned:

Spoilers! Highlight to read!

I'm hearing that there is a tribe, or a band of children and people who are outcasts from Tatooine. If what people are saying is true, they assist helping Anakin rescue the slaves on the desert planet and they battle the bounty hunters.

And by the way, that includes Leeanna Walsman as Aurra Sing and other bounty hunters as well ...

Wow! If this is true, here's some of my (Josh) speculation about it all, and you'll also need to highlight it as well:

If Episode II fits the model of Empire Strikes Back more than the other movies, it could be possible that this is the opening action sequence near the beginning of the movie. Does Anakin return to free the slaves and meet up with others to help him and have a terrific battle in the sand of Tatooine (and possibly Mos Eisley)?

There's also a possiblity that this could be the action sequence that Episode I had near the middle of the film in the pod race. This could be found after the plot development and political intrigue of the opening sequence and we find why Queen Amidala is now only called Padme and just how far Palpatine has risen to power between the movies. Perhaps she's no longer the queen or she has to stay under disguise again because of the fighting and unrest?

I'm just not sure it's a big enough plot point to be the climax at the end of the movie (besides we need some serious Sith complications in there at that point anyhow), and I also feel that Tatooine is to important to be left near the end. Because while Anakin is on the desert planet he must see/find out about his mother (Pernilla August was just confirmed also for a small role in SW2) and that may have something to do with how the movie will end and Anakin turn.

And hey, let's throw this into the mix as well. Let's say the new picture on the Official site is Anakin running to his spaceship on Corusant after he hears of some problem on Tatooine. His emotions are running high and runs out of the Jedi Temple on Corusant despite the councils wish to discuss more pressing matters. Kinda adds a bit of depth to the first picture from the movie, doesn't it? Again keep in mind it's all speculation, but worthy of reporting for sure.

And finally, here's a clip from an early 1973 draft of the Star Wars (view the scripts online here) that may also shed some light on this speculation and spy report:

"In the temple they discover a rebel band of ten boys (aged 15 to 18) who are planning an attack on one of the Imperial outposts. The boys laugh in anticipation of the blow they will strike the Empire in the name of the princess. They all stop laughing, but the laughing continues and they look around in consternation. Into the sanctuary ambles Skywalker, scratching himself, amused at the idealism of the youths. He barely glances at them. The contrast between the boy rebels with their terse nods, their meaningful glances, and Skywalker, a real general, a real man could not be greater. The boys plead to join the party to protect the princess, but the general refuses, and insists they all return to their homes. They say they have no place to go and begin to follow the party across the wasteland.

One night the party is attacked by one of the large beasts that roam the plains, and is eventually killed by the boy rebels. The general reluctantly accepts the presence of the boys, and allows them to join the group."

This is certainly an interesting report. And we all know that Owen, Beru and Shmi are slated to return and now Watto, so the plot thickens on the return to the Skywalker's home planet. More the minute we get it.
