SPY REPORT: The Jedi Code

Posted By Sebastian on January 11, 2001

Sith Interceptor once again chimes in with another detail about Episode II. Spoilers ahead, so highlight the area below to check it out!

A few days ago, StarWars-Union.de posted this report about the wedding between Anakin and Padme. Now here's something more to add to the mix:

It is in fact against the Jedi Code for Jedi to marry. Padme reminds Anakin of this fact:

"Jedi aren't allowed to marry. You swore an oath, remember? You'd be expelled from the order."

Obi-Wan doesn't know of the wedding when it occurs, he and the other Jedi believe Anakin is just escorting Padme home.

One more step in Anakin's journey to the Dark Side.

UPDATE!! - Several people have written in with comments about the above spy report. Highlight to read them:

Edward Hill sends the following:

Love your site. Just a little FYI Regarding the scoop on Ep 2 saying that Jedi are forbidden to marry. THe Ki ADi Mundi Dark Horse comic books which take place just before Ep 1 show him as married and with children. I know, I know, they are not canon. But everything in the EU has to be approved by Lucasfilm. And knowing that when this comic was written, the script to Ep 2 was already written, I find it hard to believe they would let this detail slip by. It was not a minor plot point in the story, but a major factor.

While Edward is incorrect about when the script was completed (it was only lst year), his main point is true. Ki Adi Mundi IS married in the comic. In fact, he has multiple wives. However, the Expanded Universe also said that Obi-Wan and Owen Lars were brothers, and that was disregarded. You can probably expect the comic with Ki Adi to be disregarded by Lucas, too. He'll do his own thing no matter what is approved by the comic editors. However, it will probably be explained away as Ki Adi being allowed an exception, or it only applying to human Jedi, or something like that. Who knows.

-Nate1234- sends this:

I'd like to show you something I've tried to submit three times before in the past but you've never posted. In light of the spy report about the Jedi Code of not marrying, I thought you'd appreciate it.

In the first draft of A New Hope, after Anakin exits a closet with a female aide, General Skywalker makes reference to the code.

GENERAL
You are trained well, but remember, a Jedi must be single-minded, adiscipline your father obviously never learned, hence your existence. Clean yourself up. Discipline is essential. Your mind must follow the way of the Bendu.

I hope this helps.

That's definitely interesting! The old drafts are full of clues for the prequels. You can find them in our multimedia section.

UPDATE 2!!! - More comments from Star Wars nuts from all over the world! We address them here:

A lot of people have been writing in with examples of how this Jedi not marrying law does not fit with what has previously been established. One example was Nomi Sunrider from the Tales of the Jedi comic. In that case, two Jedi were married. True, but that took place 1000 years before Episode I. Things change. The comics also said there were tons of Sith while the movie came back and said there were only two at a time.

Other readers have pointed out that the character sheet on the Official Site for Plo Koon states that he comes from a long line of Jedi. True, but how do you know that Plo Koon's race marries in order to reproduce? What if they reproduce asexually? What if the no marry law only applies to humans? There's still a lot to consider (plus the fact that Lucas probably didn't write those character biographies).

Other readers have pointed out that Luke Skywalker and Mara Jade married in the Union comic and the novels. Again, that's correct. However, Luke also trained dozens of Jedi at once while the movies show that each Jedi has only one Padawan at a time. Things change, and the rules about marrying could have changed with the "New Jedi Order", too.

The biggest problem here is that many readers seem to think Lucas is bound by what is in the books or comics. That's not true at all. In fact, Lucas has shown that he can change what he has done in previous movies, too. After all, I bet you thought Han Solo shot Greedo first in ANH, eh? Expect the rules to be re-written with Episode II, the least of which would be this marriage issue.
