Interview with the New Beru

Posted By Scott on May 10, 2002

DB Magazine interviewed Bonnie Maree Piesse, the new Beru in Episode II:

Most of Piesse's scenes were on location in Tunisia… "So I didn't have any blue screen [digital work], I was always talking to real people, which made it a lot easier. But Ewan McGregor had weeks and weeks and weeks in front of a blue screen, and that would get really tiring."

Not that Piesse actually got to hang out with Obi-Wan, McGregor's character. "I didn't even get to meet most of the actors - I was mainly working with Natalie Portman [Padmé Amidala], Hayden Christensen [Anakin Skywalker], Joel Edgerton [yes, him out of 'The Secret Life Of Us' - he plays "Uncle" Owen Lars, the character Beru subsequently marries], Jack Thompson [Cliegg Lars, Owen's father], Anthony Daniels [C-3PO] and Kenny Baker [R2-D2 - yes, there's someone in there], they were the main ones. I saw a few people in the studios in Sydney, but I only had one day there. So there are still lots of people I've never met."

I had to know: do Daniels and Baker bicker? "No!" she laughs. "They don't. I think they get along quite nicely. Actually, Anthony Daniels is very funny out on set, he really gets into the role. And he does talk like C-3PO in real life, it's very strange standing next to him. And he always wants photos taken with you, he's obsessed with taking photos. So I've got lots of photos of him," she giggles.

And what was George Lucas like to work with? "He's very… quietly intelligent," she says thoughtfully. "You look at him and you can see that he's thinking about everything, he knows everything that's going on, but he doesn't say that much. So the first day on set was quite scary because he was quite quiet. But once I got to know him he really loosened up, and it was really, really nice working with him. He started giving me constructive criticism and I could just sit down and have a chat with him. He's a very nice guy." And what does Big George talk about? "He talks about his daughters - and about the film, really. He asked about my life and things. He's a person."
