How Do You Say Dooku?

Posted By Scott on July 23, 2001

DarthMaul84 sends the following blurb in from the San Diego Comic Con: "Dooku is pronounced Dough-Ku. Steve Sansweet said it, and I asked him afterwards and he said thats how it was pronounced." There you have it.

Wric adds the following: "That's brilliant of Lucas to pronounce Dooku (dough-ku). Doku is the Japanese word for poison. Talk about foreshadowing..."

Update: Joaoed sends in this:

"Just a thought: I was just reading the report on the right pronunciation of Dooku's name and something came to mind: the fact is that I?m from Brazil, and it seems that Brazilian MAD magazine writers are having a walk in the park writing the prequel trilogy movie spoofs.

Why? Well, first there was TPM, where you had Captain Panaka, which means "Dork" around here, pronounced exactly the same, but with a "C" instead of a "K" - Panaca. This was the reason why he was always refered to simply as "Captain" in the portuguese dubbed version ( even when he answered himself Obi Wan's call in the Tatooine sequence! ).

And now, for Episode 2, you have Dooku... that may sound cool in Japan, but around here, that means someone has... how can I put this politely... has non-straight sexual preferences, but again with a "C" instead of a "K" - Doocu! Does this mean this character will be known simply as "Count" around here?"

Joaoed, let us know how Count Dooku will be referred to in the Portuguese dubbing of Episode II. ;)
