AOTC Connection in New Video Game Posted By Joshua on October 26, 2001
PS2 IGN has a fantastic preview of the new Jedi Starfighter game. Here's a clip, thanks to snap-hiss for the link:
The Clones are officially attacking PlayStation 2. LucasArts is presently preparing the very first in what should be a wave of Episode II console titles, and PS2 is first on the list, with Star Wars Jedi Starfighter, the sequel to the first Starfighter game from early in 2001. Jedi Starfighter, as the title suggests, features Jedi in starfighters -- specifically, the Jedi Starfighters (okay, the bad humor is getting out of control here) that allow them to use their Force powers as well as conventional weapons in space combat. Through 15 missions, you can fly those and a few other fighters of the Old Republic, following a story that builds on the events and characters already introduced in Star Wars: Starfighter.
Our heroine is Jedi Adi Gallia, already introduced in Star Wars Episode 1: Jedi Power Battles and a few other secondary/tertiary tales from the Star Wars universe. She naturally flies the eponymous starfighter, and has access to the many Force powers it enables and amplifies. Force Lightning drains power from enemy ships, disabling them without causing permanent damage. Force Shields throw up a defensive barrier that adds to the craft's mechanical protection. For Force Reflex, read "bullet time" -- it's a special effect that slows the world outside the starfighter while its performance is unaffected. Finally, Force Shockwave radiates an omnidirectional energy surge outward from the ship, damaging targets within a certain range.
Fighting alongside Gallia is another familiar face, the space pirate Nym, who was introduced in the original Starfighter. Nym still flies his Havoc bomber, but it has new secondary weapons now, including cruise missiles, cluster missiles, and proximity mines. Nym and Adi are the only characters available in the single-player story mode, where they do battle with Cavik Toth's Sabaoth Squadron and other forces of the Trade Federation -- the story is original, but it crosses paths with that of the movie, and as in Starfighter they culminate in the same final battle.
