Anthony Daniels talked to The Herald Sun here today about ATTACK OF THE CLONES. " Daniels made it known he too isn't a fan of Jar Jar Binks, and confirms that in Episode 2, Jar Jar is as good as gone. "Episode 1 took loads of acclaim at the box office but a number of real fans were'nt happy with it. They're going to be pleased with the one we're doing now. It is definetly darker".
Daniels also comments on George and his over-merchandising of these movies. "What Can I say that's not nasty? Even George Lucas would admit there's a problem with overmerchandising these movies and it has become an object lesson in how not to do it and they won't make the same mistake again. I hope".
Thanks for the report!
Update: In the full article at News.com.au, Daniels has some interesting anecdotes about the early days of ANH:
ANTHONY Daniels is far from the typical Hollywood egotist who gushes over their latest project. The tiny Englishman, who has played the camp android C-3PO in all five Star Wars movies, is refreshingly honest in his opinions, particularly those of the original film, Star Wars: A New Hope.
Daniels was lured by producer George Lucas to the ambitious project because he was curious about the character he was offered, C-3PO. His first opinions of the film were less than complimentary. "It was crap," he says, without a hint of laughter.
Why? "Did you see the script? I had no idea what it was about. The only thing I liked was C-3PO."
But the film turned out to be a huge critical and box office success. Daniels, 55, is the only person to act in all five Star Wars movies, with the fifth, Attack of the Clones, due out next year. He remains amazed that one part could catapult him to stardom, but far from getting wrapped up in his fame he remains cheeky and modest, happy to chat away about the project that has defined his life.
Daniels is happy to spill the dirt on Lucas, the controversial Phantom Menace character Jar Jar Binks and everything else about Star Wars. Despite Star Wars' success, Daniels nearly returned to British radio and theatre unheralded after the first movie.
Lucas did not like Daniels' portrayal of C-3PO and he spent months trying to dub Daniels' voice. He had given Daniels no direction during the filming of the movie and no indication there was any problem. "It was about six months later that they rang up and said, 'George really hates your performance', and I don't think he meant to be unkind, but what do you say?" Several American actors, Richard Dreyfus included, were tried before Lucas reluctantly kept Daniels.
More troubles were ahead, with Daniels told to remain anonymous so people would believe the character was controlled robotically. "That was quite difficult, because all the reviews would say C-3PO was terrific and it never had my name on it. They seemed to be in denial of the fact that I had input in the movie."
For Daniels, out of favour with Lucas and unhappy with the working conditions on the movie, it seemed his venture into movies was over.
"I thought Star Wars was a one-off movie. I also thought it was a fairly crap movie and wasn't that fun to do." But he allowed himself to be lured back for The Empire Strikes Back, released in 1980, and he says things got a lot better.
