UK Star Wars Marathon Review

Posted By Britany on May 18, 2005

Matt sends in a review of the Star Wars marathon at the Empire Leicester Square in London on May 16th.

by Matt

My eyes and head have just recovered from sitting through the first ever screening of all 6 star wars films in a cinema at the Empire UCI in London. The crowd of about 1,300 people were pumped up practically all day, a few notable highlights were:

  • The 501st battalion of stormtroopers took photos all day, with special photos with a live R2 unit and other star wars characters inside the cinema - you can check these out at amdtour.com
  • Man dressed as wookiee coming/gelling/hair spraying his wookiee helmet ALL DAY, this guy was crazed and sat in the aisle for most of the screenings.
  • Man dressed as Darth Maul assured me he'd never seen 'The Empire Strikes Back' or 'Return of the Jedi' and had only watched the others once. Direct quote: 'I'd be embarrassed to go all out with a costume, I'm not that crazy" - the guy spent an hour doing his make-up.....
Richard Bacon from capital FM officially started the day, the guy was rubbish and the guy who ran the event from the cinema staff (Andy) got a huge ovation - all day - 'we want Andy' chants broke out repeatedly.

There was a great pantomime atmosphere throughout each showing, the 20th century fox logo got a huge cheer each time, the a long time ago.... got an expectant hush and the STAR WARS got a massive ovation each time with the crowd going absolutely nuts - lightsabers being waved etc etc. (these cheers usually lasted until the entire opening scroll disappeared).

Each main character got a huge cheer the first time they were introduced with Yoda during Empire being the loudest. Even Jar Jar got a spattering of cheers with the true marks trying to salvage meaning to his existence.

The biggest cheer of the day (excluding anything episode 3 related) went to Yoda for his John Wayne intro to meet Dooku in AOTC.

Between episodes 2 and 3 we got treated to a dodgy feed from the red carpet and were then forced to endure the bonus dvd on the ROTS soundtrack before Episode 3 started - this actually bothered everyone as the video for Battle of Heroes contains loads of ep3 footage which angered just about everyone even those more spoiled than others.

The group of stormtroopers arrived in the cinema before ep3 with a suited darth as well all making their way to stage, we then got treated to appearances by Rick McCallum (decent cheer) who spoke only 3 words about ep3 "it ****ing rocks" Then the evil Emperor made his way to stage to chorus of comedy boos, then Mr. Christensen sauntered down to the stage to a massive ovation (at least i thought it was massive) Hayden came off awesome to the crowd as he shook everyone's hand, and looked them directly in the eyes and gave a respectful nod each time - a great guy.... And then...... Mr. Lucas himself came out to a cheer that could have raised the dead - truly deafening. He tried to say a few words but was drowned out by huge cheers and then an emphatic WE WANT NINE chant - this was answered equally emphatically by George who simply said: "look, the story starts when Anakin is nine and end when he's dead." - funny stuff.

The credits finally roll for episode 3 and we are all treated to a visually stunning masterpiece.

The day delivered on all accounts and the special appearances of the stars both before the film and quickly after provided a great cap to an already great day. The pantomime like atmosphere was great and the energy flowed all day and most, if not all in attendance had an awesome time.
