Lacklustre Start for Episode III in Qatar Posted By Britany on May 20, 2005
Steven reports:
My brother Matthew works overseas in Qatar (in the Middle East).
He was at the first showing (2.30pm) of 'Star Wars: Episode III' at the 'City Central Mall' in Doha, where there were a grand total of 12 people in the theater, when each screen seats approximately 400 people.
My brother tells me Doha is pretty modern as far as western culture goes and the mall is the epicenter. If you want a taste of home, you go to the mall. For example, it's got Starbucks, Gap, and western-style Italian, Mexican, Japanese & Chinese restaurants.
Update:
F adds:
Contrary to what was written earlier, the first showing was not at 2.30pm but at 11.30am, which I attended personally with about 40 other people.
Furthermore, it is prudent to point out that people do not go to the theaters during the day. I just came from the mall, known as City Centre, and it was nearly impossible to get a ticket for a second showing. Last showing is 11.30pm. So, I opted to go again during the day, when it is usually void of movie-goers.
Also notable, there was virtually no advertising for the film in Qatar and although it was a new release, it was absent from the weekly movies update in the local English-language press.
