Meanwhile, final tallies on Wednesday openings revealed that "Sith" took in $5 million from 938 screens in France, an all-time high for a U.S. film, beating "The Matrix Reloaded" for boxoffice honors, according to Fox. "Sith" also was No. 1 all time in the Paris metropolitan area with 124,000 admissions, topping the 113,000 admissions for local hit "Taxi 2."

Belgium, which also opened "Sith" on Wednesday, provided the biggest opening day ever with $452,000 from 99 screens, Fox said.

French-speaking Switzerland came through with an opening-day tally of $393,000 from 36 screens.
