I'm a single parent of 30 years who introduced his son to Star Wars as a bedtime movie at the age of four. We just recently attended the Sacramento premier of ROTS, which was showing on 5 screens simultaneously at 12:01. I arrived there at about 12 noon and was about tenth in line. It was a rainy day but the folks at the Regal Cinema led us into the theater at about 6pm.
That was when the fun began.
It was then that the 501st Legion stormtroopers, clonetroopers, Chewbacca and last but not least, Darth Vader appeared. The sheer size of Vader and Chewy was amazing. A few news and radio stations also arrived and started interviewing fans and doing raffles for prizes. My 12 year-old son proudly wielded his Master Replica Lightsaber for the cameras and news crews, and was interviewed by our local Fox affiliate.
We were carefully ushered into the theaters at 9:30pm. It was wonderful to see such a broad variety of fans fill the theater with one commonly shared interest. At 10 o'clock my phone started ringing with people calling me saying my son, Jazel was on TV! Shortly after, all the 501st Legion along with Vader and Chewy marched into our theater along with the theater management and announced that one lucky person would be winning a limited edition painting and would get it autographed by three Star Wars actors. He then told us to look at the sides of our seats for a special ticket. It wasn't me though it was fun to watch the whole theater get up and look.
After the movie, my son got up and looked at me with this sad look on his face. I thought he was tired so I asked, "What's wrong?"
He just looked up at me and said, "Dad, it's over."
I gave him a reassuring smile and a hug took his hand in mine and walked out the theater, our lives once again, changed forever.
