Britain Goes Crazy for Episode III Posted By Joshua on May 10, 2005
Mel McCormick sends us scores of links to raving reviews for Revenge of the Sith from Britain. Here's many positive and one pretty negative one at the end - all the links lead to the complete review. Enjoy!
THIS IS LONDON Like the best of the Star Wars films, this is a movie you will want to see again and again. It breathes new life into the series and makes you want to watch Star Wars Episode IV and the rest of the saga again even the first two prequels. Time will tell, but it seems that Lucas has exceeded all expectations and come up with a cinematic event that compares favourably with the original three movies. [read review]
TIMES ONLINE It may be the collective force of audiences across the world willing George Lucas back from the dark side; or it may be the eventual coming of age of a brainchild that was indulged for too long. But from the moment the signature script starts rolling up the screen and the twin star-fighter jets of Anakin Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi tear triumphantly onto the spacescape, you can sense that this one is going to be different. THE BBC Good news first: George Lucas has delivered the film Star Wars fans have been praying for. Yes, it's true: Revenge Of The Sith kicks geek botty. The final episode of the prequels completes the cycle begun in 1977. Anakin Skywalker (Hayden Christensen) is reborn with the familiar face furniture and bondage leathers of Darth Vader, the Emperor (a splendid Ian McDiarmid) reveals his nefarious plot, and we discover the true origins of Leia, Luke, Yoda and a certain walking carpet. DARK MATTERS But even the Vader haters out there will have to get down on bended knee and acknowledge that Revenge of the Sith is potentially the most marvellous, entertaining and all round satisfying film to hit the screens this year… The Force is very definitely back and it rules! [read review]
TIME OUT It's been a long time coming, but Time Out is pleased to report that you can leave your preconceptions at the cinema door as 'Revenge of the Sith' is the Star Wars film that fans have been waiting more than 20 years to see. Having spent the good part of a decade making the disappointing and at times downright infuriating episodes I and II, Lucas's franchise rises like a heavily scarred phoenix from the flames with 'Episode III'. EMPIRE Mercifully, Revenge Of The Sith is (deep sigh) light-years ahead of the turgid Menace and the undercooked Clones. Not only does the gym-toned action tick every box on the fanboy Christmas list - five lightsaber battles no less - and the long promised darkness truly earn its 12A certificate (dead Jedi younglings, indeed) but practically all of the most trenchant bitchings have been addressed: the digital flora and fauna has real weight and substance, any romance is rushed through and blinkin’ Binks doesn’t get a look in. THE MAIL But the new characters are an uninteresting lot. Even the fourarmed Android leader General Grievous is a bore. He is given little to do before Obi-Wan Kenobi causes him grievous bodily harm except laugh fiendishly and breathe with enormous difficulty. Episode III has the same faults as episodes I and II (terrible dialogue and worse acting) plus two brand new ones - a confusing lack of geographical sense and a tendency to leave gaping plot holes.
