TFN's Miniatures Scenario Contest Results!

Posted By Dajuan on February 7, 2009

After hours of judging, play testing, and debating the results of TheForce.Net's Star Wars Miniatures Scenario Contest are finally in!

First place goes to Rick for his scenario The Fur is Flying!

This scenario was one of our (the judges, Dajuan and Hothie) favorites from the start. His entry is a Republic era scenario that uses a good mix of newer and older figures. All of the figures and the map are very accessible. The scenario was fairly well balanced, the rules were very clear, the map was used very well, and it was just plain fun. The only issue we had with it is that every time we either played it or watched people in our gaming group play it the Republic lost. Even when We put a couple of our best players on the Republic they still could not quite beat the Seps (though it was really close).

Some thoughts we had to help with this is to give the Republic one more Wookiee Scoundrel and maybe only let the Seps get reinforcements on an Initiative role of a 1-6 or 1-10. This would still make it difficult for the Republic to win, but not quite so difficult. It really was a great scenario though.

When we informed Rick that he had won the contest and gave him our critiques of the scenario this is what he had to say: "Funny you mention the balancing. I first wrote this sometime after Universe came out [I believe] and had Tarfful as the chieftain, but I altered some of the pieces to include things that might be more accessible for this contest. When we had originally played through it, the Republic won, rather handily, so I tweaked a few things, but I might have gone too far the other way. Originally had fewer starting points in the Separatist side, and it was easier to avoid raising the alarm. Not sure if Tarfful's CE would help. Zaalbar's quite a bit more offensive oriented himself, but he has to get adjacent to get the most out of him (limiting as his defeat is a victory objective)."

Second place goes to Jason for his scenario Rumble at Chalmun's Cantina.

This scenario was also one of our early favorites because of it's uniqueness. Most of the scenarios that we were sent for this contest consisted of two different squads going after one another with a couple special rules and goals. This scenario was a crazy free-for-all that got bigger and bigger as the game went on. The randomness of the initial "squads" and people in the cantina really added to the fun of it. There were a lot of laughs when this one was play tested. A couple of the issues we had with the scenario dealt with placing and the sheer number of pieces that could be on the board. We used the Mos Eisley map since we didn't have the other one available. We weren't sure if we should place characters just in the building or everywhere on the left of the map. We ended up placing them everywhere but that made the game a little long. One suggestion we would make is if you want a shorter game just put characters inside the cantina. Hothie also suggested alphabitizing the neutral player's cards from the start, otherwise it takes quite a while to sort through them.

Third place goes to Dustin for his scenario A Plan Awry

We really liked the scenario as well. Some of the things we liked the best were: the fact that players could customize their own squads, the map was easy to find and well suited for the scenario, and its creativity. The camera idea was particularly interesting. A couple things we would suggest changing a bit to make it a better scenario would be playing Darth Zannah, the facing issues, and the size of the Crime Squads. We played the scenario with three people and the person who played at Zannah was really bored, we would suggest having two people play the scenario and having the Crime Squad play Zannah as well. Having to pay attention to how the characters faced during the game got a little tedious because we generally play by facing our figs a particular way when they are activated, it was confusing to us. Last thing, we would suggest having the main crime squad be a 100 point squad instead of 150 because it was a little too powerful against the Jedi.

Thanks everyone!
Hothie and I wanted to thank everyone who submitted entries. We really had a great time reading them and playing a few of them out. We hope to run this contest again in the future and run some other Star Wars Miniatures contests. If you have feedback or suggestions on that please email me at Dajuan@TheForce.net. Also, we are sorry we could not critique all of the entries here, if you are not one of the winners and would like our feedback please email me.

A special thanks to Steve at Miniature Market for the inspiration for the contest and the prize support. He runs a great store and site. He caters to all miniatures fans no matter what the genre. Be sure to check them out!
