A New Perspective on
the Lack of Star Wars DVDs
Rumoredly, it has been stated that George Lucas continued work on the Special Editions even after their theatrical releases... now, why on Earth would George do a thing like that? Maybe he's planning for another re-release and wants to "tweak" his vision by creating a finite version of the films we all know and love. Maybe he's still not through with his saga... and maybe we'll be kept waiting for a while.
Now, there's rumors as well of an Episode I DVD coming out by the end of this year. We'll wait and see, but I'm not holding my breath. If it does, ok, fine. But where's the TRILOGY?? I think it's being prepped yet another time over (or re-vamped, if you will) for theatrical re-release and will contain even more new scenes or changed scenes.
With Episodes I, II, and III, George has had everything at his disposal, technology-wise. He's also not had any studio pressure much like in the old days... everything has been on HIS time schedule, and Episode I would not have been released if George had felt it still needed massive reworking.
WHICH LEADS ME TO BELIEVE.... In his mind, Episode I is complete. Episode II will be "complete" upon its release, as will Episode III. George has everything in check now with the three prequels.
However, he has often moaned about the lack of completeness on the original trilogy. And when he has the opportunity to finish it once and for all (my estimate: between Episode II's release and Episode III's filming) he will do so JUST IN TIME FOR (big thought here....)
EPISODES I, II, III, IV, V, and VI to be released SIMULTANEOUSLY in 2005, FOLLOWED by a complete "Anthology" release. He will feel his vision is complete, and we'll all get DVD's in one fell swoop.
Now, I can understand, 2005 is a long way off... but follow this train of thought: We ALL screamed "foul" when we got no SW DVD of any kind. George heard us, and "supposedly" we'll be getting Episode I this year on DVD. Ok, so he quiets us down a little... quenches our thirst and keeps us off his back a little. Well, Episode II is hitting theaters in May 2002. If we get a DVD of Episode I by years' end, we may not have time to fire up the engines of complaint and noise before Episode II is released. We'll all shut up and be happy for six months to a year... at which point, Episode II will likely be released on DVD. That would be to keep us quiet and keep us from bitching about "still not having the original trilogy on DVD"... But then, we'll eventually start moaning again... and then George will turn around with his "plans" for the original trilogy to have some sort of "SPECIAL-SPECIAL edition" re-release in conjunction with the release of Episode III.
Now, doesn't that make sense once you ponder George and his great profiteering motives? I mean, hand it to the guy, he is a great enterpreneur.
And if it all pans out right, this may be what happens. All six movies at once in the theaters, then on DVD. But up to that point, only an Episode I and possibly Episode II DVD. No more than that, is what I'm banking on.
