On Location: Part 15
The Power of Illustration

Summary by: Don Keefe

(Please note that the following comments are my opinions and speculations regarding the production of Episode II and do not necessarily reflect those of TheForce.net)

This “On Location” clip was introduced outside on the Fox Studios lot. I’m assuming that she’s also an actress/extra in Episode II. Nice hair, kinda reminds me of someone else’s hairstyle.

During this 2 minute and 12 second “On Location” clip, Ahmed interviews concept artist Dermot Power.

Ahmed: Ahmed Best here, here’s something new that you have no idea what it’s about. Introduce yourself to the World Wide Web.

Dermot: Dermot Power Concept Illustration
Ahmed: Concept Illustration is something that we haven’t covered yet on the World Wide Web. Tell everyone out there what Concept Illustration is.
Dermot: I basically draw all kinds of weird stuff.

(Notice the book in the background next to the Norton Utilities. I can’t tell if it’s the illustrated SW guide or not but it looks like it.)

Ahmed: What kinds of weird stuff do you draw?

Dermot: George says he wants some weird stuff and then I draw it and Trisha (Trisha Biggar- Costume Designer) and people rationalize it and try to make it come to life if they think it’s cool.

Ahmed: So does concept primarily involve costumes?
Dermot: At the moment for me it involves costumes and creatures and uh like Doug and Jay and Ed and people like that work on architecture but I tend to work on costumes and creatures.

(Dermot refers to Doug Chiang the Design Director, Jay Shuster and Ed Natividad both Concept artists who work with Doug.)

Ahmed: How did you get here Dermot?
Dermot: By plane.

Ahmed: Everybody has the same joke! Just a little side commentary for ya. Ahmed Best here. If I come and talk to you on the World Wide Web or anywhere else and you tell me you got here by taking a plane you get the gas face. Now lets see if Dermot can redeem himself.

Dermot: I came from comic books, which I did for 8 years.
Ahmed: Which ones?

'Dredd' Cover by Dermot

Dermot: For 2002 British comic, doing Judge Dredd and a bit of Batman, stuff like that.

Ahmed: Now that’s really interesting for you World Wide Web fans. Do you have a website?
Dermot: No.

Ahmed: Way behind for that but someday he will. Dermot concept illustration, you only get that kind of info here folks starwars.com.
Later.

(Notice the large calendar behind Ahmed. It shows the whole production schedule for Australia for July and August. Unfortunately I couldn’t make out anything on the individual days. But you can see a lot of Post Its in various colors. Maybe someone out there could work some Photoshop magic?)

(One other thing that I did notice during this interview was a brief shot of the monitor Dermot was working off of. It appears from the screen that he’s possibly designing a costume. Just thought I’d include it for you guys I thought it was interesting.)
