In yesterday?s update, we took an exhaustive look at the various Star Wars characters people have suggested might be hiding behind Darth Krayt?s armoured mask. So, you might ask: what?s there left to talk about?
Well, sometimes, a Sith Lord is just a Sith Lord....
Perhaps the biggest twist of all would be if there is no fallen man trapped behind the Sith Lord?s mask. It?s possible that Darth Krayt has simply always been Darth Krayt, created for the specific purpose of leading the Sith to Galactic domination.
After all, you could argue that exactly the same thing was true of Anakin Skywalker....
The Verdict: it?s hard to disprove this particular idea, and it would certainly fit in with the suggestion that the why of Darth Krayt matters more than who he is. But if the big surprise is that Krayt simply doesn?t have any secret backstory or hidden depths, then by definition, there?s not going to be much positive proof to indicate it in advance.
And, with that, I?ve run out of things to say.
Over the past seven days, I?ve tried to organize all the information we know from official sources, considered some candidates who might fit the known criteria, and pushed around some ideas for everyone to think about. I?ve also received some really good feedback from readers here, and from people on TF.N?s message-boards: thank you, all of you!
Now, though, all we can really do is sit back, and wait for the answer in the comic.
If it?s not A?Sharad Hett, I suspect it?s going to be something that we?ve not even thought of. But I?ll leave this series pretty much as I began, with a reminder of the emphasis we?ve been given by the comics? creative team: that who Darth Krayt might once have been is less important than why he became a Sith Lord.
Ultimately, backstory is probably less important than storytelling—and, in the final analysis, I trust John Ostrander and Jan Duursema to produce some Star Wars storytelling that's really worth reading.
Star Wars: Legacy #15 is on sale next month. In the mean time, issue 14, beginning the six-part Claws of the Dragon storyline, is already available. It sets the scene for what?s to follow, and sees Cade Skywalker and R2-D2 infiltrating the dark heart of Darth Krayt?s Galaxy, Imperial Center itself ? the planet Coruscant.
And, as I?ve said in previous updates, there?s also an active discussion thread on Krayt?s identity on TF.N?s message-boards.
Thanks for reading—I hope you had fun!
