Star Wars, The Licensing Champion

Posted By Eric on February 3, 2010

Lucasfilm today put out a press release describing its licensing success over the past thirty-three years, and in particular during 2009. The full release can be found here. Below are some of the key points.

Star Wars "grabbed the top slot" in boys toy properties.
Star Wars is 40% ahead of "any other toy license."
• Sales of Star Wars toys in the United States for 2009 exceed $408 million.
• The demographic of boys aged 6-11 continues to tune into The Clone Wars in ever-growing numbers.
• Because this year is the 30th anniversary of TESB, Lucasfilm and its partners will celebrate with "massive fan events, charity screenings, exclusive product promotions and much, much more."
• "After more than three decades, Star Wars continues to resonate with audiences and consumers, both in the boys demographic and with fans who’ve grown up with the franchise ... The continued success of Star Wars: The Clone Wars is an indication that once again a whole new generation of young fans have been engaged by the Saga, and we are still able to connect with fans of the original movies with activities such as those surrounding the anniversary of The Empire Strikes Back." -- Lucas Licensing President Howard Roffman

Check out the full press release here, and pat yourself on the back for keeping Star Wars at the top of the licensing food chain!
