WHO is Darth Sidious??
A new snippet of dialogue hints at the true identity of Darth Maul's Master!

Do you remember that T'bone posted a small piece of a conversation between Yoda to Mace Windu during a funeral ceremony towards the end of the movie? Here's what T'bone posted:

Yoda looks up to Mace Windu.
Yoda says, in reference to Darth Maul,
"Always two there are. No more, no less. Master and Apprentice."
Mace Windu replies,
"But which was destroyed, the Master or the Apprentice?"
It is interesting to see that the Master - Apprentice relationship between Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn and Jedi "Padawan" Obi-Wan Kenobi (see for example the dialogue posted earlier on this site) is mirrored in the Master - Apprentice relationship between the Dark Side master Darth Sidious and Dark Side apprentice Darth Maul.

The same kind of Master - Apprentice relationship 'duo' was present in the current Trilogy: Obi-Wan - Luke Skywalker and the Dark Side version of this relationship: Emperor Palpatine - Darth Vader. I think this is another nice example of the way in which George Lucas is carefully crafting his story, repeating themes and creating parallels to strengthen the unity between the Prequels and the current three films.

According to T'bone, the first scene in which we see Darth Sidious together with his apprentice Darth Maul, takes place on a balcony high above the city of Coruscant. The above picture illustrates this meeting.

AN INTRIGUING SNIIPPET OF DIALOGUE!

'Jedi Killer' tells us about another moment during which Darth Maul is instructed by his Master's Voice (highlight to read):
It's after Darth Maul tries to kill Qui-Gon on Tatoonie.  There's a bit of
that in the preview when Qui-Gon yells to Anakin: "Anakin!  Tell 'em to
take off!"  Qui-Gon barely escapes Darth Maul and gets into the ship.
As the ship departs, Qui-Gon introduces Anakin to Obi-Wan (also in the
preview). On the planet surface, Maul contacts Sidious via hologram.
There is a short dialogue between Maul and Sidious (highlight to read):

DARTH MAUL:
They are heading to you, Master.  Should I follow?

DARTH SIDIOUS:
There is no need.  Go to Naboo.  I will contact you there.

Although this is a very brief exchange, it DOES tell us something very interesting that might refuel the old discussion about the identity of Darth Sidious (highlight to read):
Qui-Gon, Obi-Wan and Queen Amidala, together with the rest of the group, are heading for Coruscant where they want to meet senator Palpatine. This puts the simple line "They are heading to you, Master" into an interesting perspective... IS Darth Sidious in reality the friendly senator Palpatine? Is that why there is "no need" for Darth maul to follow the group to Coruscant? Is Darth Sidous taking care of the group himself as senator Palpatine? Or is this just an attempt to make us think he is, and will we be surprised by the true identity of Darth Sidious in Episode 2? An intriguing question to which only George Lucas has the answer...
