Jar Jar Binks is perhaps best known to the mainstream public as one of the most-hated characters in all of Star Wars. What a lot of fans don’t realize is that Ahmed Best, the actor who provided motion capture and voice for Jar Jar, took a lot of that criticism to heart.

On this week’s episode of Positive and Negative, the podcast where comedian Tristan Miller discusses the intersectionality of mental health and the creative temperament, Miller chats with Best about his struggles with depression and suicidal thoughts following the negative reaction to his character’s role in The Phantom Menace. It’s a reminder that depression effects all walks of life, and that toxic fandom is really not all that new a phenomenon.
