Prowse, Mayhew, and Baker Still a Force Posted By Thomas on May 31, 2002
Jerome the Brooklyn Jedi chimes in with an article on Star Wars stars David Prowse, Peter Mayhew, and Kenny Baker. From the NY Daily News:
Darth Vader singing jazz? This can't be good for his image. But that's what the man behind the mask of the most famous movie villain of all time is up to.
British bodybuilder David Prowse, who ? along with the stern voice of James Earl Jones ? brought Darth Vader to life in "Star Wars" ? has embarked on a musical career.
In a way, it's kind of ironic. Not only did movie fans miss hearing Prowse's voice in the sci-fi epic, but legend has it that even Prowse didn't know writer-director George Lucas had edited out his voice in favor of Jones' until he saw the movie.
But it turns out that Prowse has a pretty good set of pipes of his own. "I'm singing [showtunes]," says Prowse. "I'm bass baritone. I don't particularly want to do opera, I really [started taking vocal lessons] because I really want to sing jazz, standards." He has already notched his first two public performances.
Actually, standing in front of people happens to be what Prowse was doing on the weekend of May 10-12 at the Pennsylvania Convention Hall in Philadelphia. As part of the "Star Wars: Men Behind the Mask" tour, Prowse and fellow "Star Wars" veterans Peter Mayhew (Chewbacca), Kenny Baker (R2D2), Jeremy Bulloch (Boba Fett) and Ray Park (Darth Maul) are on an almost nonstop tour, run by husband-and-wife agent team of Doug and Pam Murray.
Their timing couldn't have been better: The "Wizard World East" comic convention took place just before the release of the latest "Star Wars" installment, "Attack of the Clones" ? and the intergalactic actors are a big draw.
A fan in his 20s asks Prowse for permission to take a picture, but has trouble squeezing off the shot because his hands won't stop shaking. On the streets outside, however, the man who played one of Hollywood's most-recognized bad guys is almost completely anonymous.
While Prouse laments not being better-known in public, he sees the double edge of such fame as well. "I've been out with people who are instantly recognizable, Lou Ferrigno, for example," Prowse says, motioning to TV's Incredible Hulk, who's also busy signing autographs. "When I've gone out to dinner with him, it was murder, because people were forever stopping him from eating and coming up and asking him for his autograph. When he goes to the toilet, people are coming up, tapping him on the shoulder and saying 'Can I have an autograph?' And that I don't want."
Prowse's adventures began when Lucas offered him first choice of parts between Darth Vader and Chewbacca ? and the rest is history.
