Profit in Place of Academy Award Posted By Joshua on March 19, 2003
Forbes.com has a new report on the financial success of Academy Award films, including a Star Wars mention:
Cash being its own reward, they don't give an Academy Award for profitability. But if they did, these are the movies that would have won. Sure, Titanic grossed $600 million domestically. It also cost $200 million to produce.
Studios need blockbusters to cover their massive overheads, and a three-to-one ratio is nothing to sneeze at, but movies that earn large multiples of their budgets are rarer still.
Since 1990, just 15 movies have grossed more than ten times their reported production cost, while at the same time taking in at least $20 million in total. Miramax dominates the list, having distributed four of the top ten.
The most profitable movie by far is the micro-budget Blair Witch Project, which grossed $140.5 million. (Among big-budget movies, Gone with the Wind, E.T.: The Extraterrestrial and Star Wars are probably the most profitable all time.)
Rebelscum Breast Cancer Awareness Charity Patch Posted By Philip on November 25, 2014: Thanks to everybody that ordered patches. I sent a check for $1,600.00 to the National Breast Cancer Foundation on Monday. While it's not as much as I hoped for, it's still very much appreciated. They will remain for sale in the store for anybody that still wishes to purchase them. Details after the jump.
