Jack Lemmon Remembered Posted By Joshua on June 29, 2001
Ben sends us this tidbit after watching a tribute to the great actor Jack Lemmon that passed away recently:
Last night there was tribute to the great Jack Lemmon. Among the celebrity eulogies was Kevin Spacey relating some great stories about Jack. Among the clips was a Saturday Night Live clip that I had never seen before with Spacey impersonating Lemmon (made up to look older) auditioning for the role of Chewbacca. Also shown was Norm Mcdonald by way of Walter Mathau as Obi-Wan Kenobi. This was some funny stuff.
UPDATE DD sends us this update:
That classic bit... the Lost Star Wars Audition Tapes... was one of the only good bits on SNL for many years.... but whoever reported about it was a bit mistaken... Norm McDonald played Burt Reynolds playing Han I believe, but the Walter Mathau as Obi-Wan was another Kevin Spacey impersonation... he really is a master impressionist. In addition to Jack Lemmon as Chewie and Walter Mathau as Obi-Wan, Spacey also did a dead-on Christopher Walken as Han Solo...
Bulent tells us that MacDonald doing Burt Reynolds WASN'T doing Han, but Vader. You can download the clips at snl.jt.org (SNL Multimedia Website) to clear it all up.
And finally, Evan Kutaj reminds us as well that we should pause to mention Jack's life and career, most of which can be found over on the IMDb. In his honor rent a good one of his movies like Grumpy Old Men and smile a bit.
