Luke and Leia track Prince Denid's distress signal, hoping that if Velmor joins them, the whole system will. Landing a Y-Wing on a jungle world, Luke is jumped by a creature immune to lightsabers and blasters, but Denid kills it with an anti-magnetic polarization ray. Leia is immediately flirtatious with him. Denid and his fiancée, Loren, fled Velmor as youths when Imperials slew his family. His brother, Anod, stayed, Loren died in the crash, and Denid lived with Jedidiah, a family servant who refused Jedi training to protect Lorac, Denid's father. When they fled, he joined them but suffered brain damage from falling debris. Luke scorns the old man and goes to Velmor, passing a ship going the opposite way. En route, Denid woos Leia and Jedi duels with 3PO. They land at the Royal Palace, where Regent Zelor and the Council of Elders are crowning Anod King. Zelor challenges Denid, then accepts him, changing his tune "like a Norkronian whistle-snake." Posing as Loren and Korl Marcus, a bounty hunter, Leia and Luke meet Zelor, Anod, and Captain Traal, an Imperial diplomatic attaché. A scan confirms Denid's identity, but Leia's records were lost with Alderaan. As a party is held, Zelor and Traal fume that their pawn will not be King. At dinner, Zelor and Luke have an energy-sword duel, Denid proposes to Leia, and Traal asks Luke to kill them at the Ceremonial Games, offering sex, money, and power, but she plans to kill him as well. When the pilot of the ship returns, having failed to find Denid, Zelor demotes him and decides to frame Luke for killing Traal and Anod. Luke scales the Palace to warn Leia and Denid, overhears them talking, and thinks they plan to marry. The next day, at the Coronation Games, he is cold toward her. 3PO asks a 2-1B-type droid to heal Jedidiah's mind, but he is lost in Jedi delusions. Denid, Anod, Zelor, Traal, Luke, and Leia join a mrid hunt on ycaqt-back, and as Denid and Leia rest, Traal tells Luke to kill them. He pulls a gun on her, but Zelor shoots it away and Anod shoots them. Zelor shoots Traal and chases Luke into the woods, but Traal ducks, kills Anod, and follows. Luke uses the Force to sense them, which awakens Jedi's mind and he runs to help. Luke kills Zelor, then Traal tries to capture Luke, killing Jedi as he defends him. Angry, Luke knocks her out. Denid and Leia awaken (Anod's gun was on stun) as Luke mourns Jedi's death and regrets his scorn. Traal is arrested and Leia refuses Denid's proposal. As she and Luke depart, he honors Jedidiah, the last Jedi, with a burial in space.
