Marvel Star Wars #44
Duel of a Dark Lord
Published: February 1981

Lando declaress Han in perfect hibernation. Vader gives him to Fett, resets the carbon-freezing chamber for Luke, and puts a garrison on Bespin over Lando's protests. Luke and R2 see Han's body en route to Fett's ship. Luke opens fires but blast doors cut him off. As Leia, Chewie, and 3PO are taken to a cell, she sees Luke and says it's a trap, but more doors close, leading him to the chamber. As Vader and Luke draw lightsabers, Lando signals Lobot to overpower the troops and free the Rebels, but once freed, Chewie strangles him. Promising to save Han, Lando leads them to East Platform to stop Slave 1 from leaving but is too late. R2 joins them en route. Shooting as they go, they take the Falcon to chase Fett. Vader backs Luke into the carbonite chamber and activates it, but he jumps to the ceiling. Vader tries to lure him to the Dark Side, and when he resists, Vader Force-hurls objects at him. Luke deflects them but one smashes a window by a reactor shaft. Catching a walkway, Luke has little hope of survival. Lando leads the Rebels to Platform 327. R2 seeks a computer terminal to open the door, plugs into a power socket, and nearly fries himself. Lando calls for an evacuation and takes an alternate route to the Falcon . After a long duel, Vader severs Luke's hand, which falls down the shaft with his 'saber. Deactivating his blade, he offers Luke a hand, says he is his father, and offers to defeat the Emperor and rule together. Shocked, Luke lets himself fall, dropping through an exhaust port miles above Bespin and grabbing a weather vane. The Rebels try to leave in the Falcon , but the hyperdrive is down. Luke reaches out to Leia's mind, but Vader also hears his call and orders his ship prepared. Leia and Lando turn to save him, and after battling TIEs, catch him as he falls, then escape Bespin. As Executor approaches, Piett claims the Falcon 's hyperdrive is deactivated. Delirious, Luke wonders why Ben never told him about Vader. As Chewie tries to fix the engine, R2 accesses the computer and the Falcon hits lightspeed before Executor 's tractor beam catches it. As Vader watches it leave, his officers fear his wrath. Later, aboard an EF76-B Nebulon-B frigate, Luke receives a bionic hand and watches from a viewport with Leia and the droids as Lando and Chewie take the Falcon to Tatooine to find Han and Boba Fett.
