Marvel Star Wars #39
The Empire Strikes Back
Published: September 1980

On Hoth, sixth planet of the Hoth System and the new Rebel base, Luke rides tauntaun patrol. Checking in with Han, he investigates a meteorite impact, but is attacked by a wampa ice creature. An Arakyd Viper probe droid rises from a crater to scout Hoth. At Echo Base, Han returns from his patrol, tethers his tauntaun, and finds Chewie in the main hangar, fixing the Falcon amid T-47 snowspeeders and X-Wings. Major Bren Derlin tells him that he and General Carlist Rieekan heard of the bounty hunter on Ord Mantell and know why he's leaving. Leia tries to stop him, but Han says Jabba's Gank Killers will get him unless he pays. They argue, belying a mutual attraction, then storm off as a wampa breaks through a wall unseen. Luke awakens in an ice cave, hanging by his feet from the ceiling. Unable to reach his fallen 'saber but guided by Ben Kenobi's voice, he uses the Force to grab it, then kills the wampa and runs out into the snow. The droids argue over R2's decision to raise the heat in Leia's room, flooding her belongings. Finding Han, they report Luke missing. He checks with the watch officer, who says no speeders are ready and the cold would kill tauntauns. Ignoring him, Han takes a tauntaun to search Sector 4. Luke succumbs to the night storms as a vision of Ben Kenobi tells him to go to the Dagobah System and train with Yoda, his teacher. Han finds him comatose, and when his tauntaun dies, builds a shelter to brave the night. The base's shield doors are sealed, but in the morning, T-47s are dispatched and Zev Senesca (Rogue 2) rescues them. Medical droids 2-1B and FX-7 heal Luke in a bacta tank as Han and Leia look on. R2 goes to Section J, where a wampa breaks in. Stunning it, the Rebels spot an intruder in Zone 12, near Advance Station 3-8. Leia and Rieekan call the station, but the probot destroys it. Snowspeeders investigate and Han and Chewie find the probot, but it signals Vader and self-destructs. Captain Piett, first officer of the Super -class Star Destroyer Executor , reports this to Admiral Ozzel, who dismisses it until Vader says they've found the Rebels. Over Ozzel's protests, he orders General Maximillian Veers' troops to the Hoth System. EnsViews Comic Review
