THE SITH IN THE PREQUELS?

Based on the novels and comics, it appears that the SITH were NOT Jedi.  Jedi's, or force users that turn to the Dark side are called Dark Jedi.  That was made pretty clear.  So........who were the SITH.  Could they use the force?

My understanding was that the SITH performed SITH magic (whatever that was), and that many thousands of years ago, the Dark Jedi (after having lost a duel with the good Jedi) were exiled to the other side of the galaxy.  There they stumbled across the SITH.  These Dark Jedi dominated the SITH and ruled over them, with the Dark Jedi's  being called Dark Lords of the Sith.  These Dark Jedi, therefore not only could use the force.....but they could use SITH magic as well (they learnt it off the SITH)

As for SITH magic.....what is it?..........I really don't know.  In the comics it is said that the SITH perform their magic by using amulets (which were these funny things they put on their wrists).  This physical object apparently helped them focus and channel the magic. Somehow, by using SITH magic, they could create living monstrocities.  They were an ancient race of magicians who were good at alchemy. To use a quote from STAR WARS GALAXY MAGAZINE:..."The SITH are basically an ancient race of people who had developed arcane powers based on alchemy and knowledge of the Dark Side of the force"

Can anyone explain this a little better?  Does anyone out there know if the SITH could actually FEEL the force.  If they had knowledge of the force (albeit the Dark side).......how does that differ from a Jedi? Were they force users?

Most importantly.....given that this information is official STAR WARS canon.........how will the SITH feature in the prequels.  Remember they are NOT the same as Dark Jedi.

Maybe the SITH themselves are extinct, and no one uses SITH magic anymore.............

Given that Darth Vader is called the Dark lord of the Sith.........this title that he gives himself would surely have to be explained by the end of Episode 3, wouldn't it?"

Yes, the idea of Fallen jedi fleeing and then merging with the race of Sith is what the comics present. I personally don't like that story.  If one reads the early drafts of Star Wars, the Sith appear in it and you get an idea of what they are.

The Jedi and the Sith are just rival factions of force users, each with their own code.   The Jedi were force users who used the light side of the force and fought for peace and justice, and the Sith were force users who used the dark side of the force, and worked towards their own goals.  As someone developing powers in the force you could join the Jedi, or you could join the Sith or neither I suppose.

Now Dark Jedi are apparently fallen Jedi.  The Sith aren't all Dark Jedi, but some of the them could be.  Like the Jedi they would be made up of beings from all different species.  Some may have been Jedi before the joined, others not.  It may help to think of both Jedi and Sith as religious sects, with a long history of fighting.

The comics would have you believe that the Sith were a race who were 'conquered' by fallen jedi, and the Dark Lords were force users who were descendants of the original conquerors and were eventually all but wiped out.  Subsequent Dark Lords were just individuals who had mastered their ancient teachings.  I don't think this is what George has in mind for the prequels.  It certainly didn't seem that way in the early drafts."

So, I believe that the Sith are just a dark side club who occasionally reek havok upon the galaxy.  What about everybody else?

Chris Maier wrote: "The Sith are indeed a race discovered by the Dark Jedi during their exile. The sith worshipped the dark lords as their masters and set up the first Sith empire. Apparentally, Sith magic is in some way connected with the force and appears to be a power that "Has as much corrupting influence as the Dark Side Of The Force." According to Wedge Antilles in The X-wing Rogue Squadron comics(Although he can't sense the force himself, he's obviously seen it in action).Apparentally, the energy is so immense even those who are'nt force sensitive are effected and as a result have nightmares and express agressive and dreamy behaviors. The Sith DO focus their energy through amulets and various other crystals. The Sith broke off from the Dark Jedi around 5,000 years before the Star Wars Trilogy and headed toward Yavin Four. At this point, the Sith were humanoid. They built large temples to worship their leaders, but these eventually fell into Disarray as the Sith devolved into inhuman savages-called Masassi.

However, Exar Kun arrived on the moon and, after proving his worth, started to restore the Massassi to their golden age. They built new temples and new shrines for him, and assisted him in attacks on Coruscant and on Ossus, the Jedi library world. When the Sith War came to Yavin Four, the Jedi unleashed a firestorm that nearly devastated the planet(And imprisoning Exar Kun's spirit until Dark Apprentice). One of the Sith transformed by Exar Kun took refuge under one of the temples. This "Night Beast" later attacked the rebels when it was awakened from it's slumber during an Imperial raid on the base(See Classic Star Wars). The same CSW story also hinted that some Massassi might have escaped in spacecraft.

So the Sith might or might not be extinct. Originally, Timothy Zahn was going to introduce the Sith as Thrawn's death commandos in his novels, but Lucasfilm disapproved and they wound up becoming the Noghri instead(This would have explained Vader's Lord Of The Sith title).

Apparently, the Sith can create monsters-here's some of them:
  • The green, crocidile-like creatures that attacked Nomi Sunrider(Tales Of The Jedi)
  • The big purple slug that attacked Exar Kun(Dark Lords Of The Sith)
  • Living dead(Dark Lords Of The Sith)
  • Altered Massassi(Dark Lords Of The Sith,Classic Star Wars)
  • Rancors(It has been hinted that Rancors are Sith creations-they are used heavily by the force-sensitive people of Dathomir in The Courtship Of Princess Leia, and also, the Emperor's Dark side Crysallis beasts in Dark Empire II strongly resemble Rancors)
  • A green slug that attacks Wedge in the X-wing Rogue Squadron comic book series Requiem For A Rogue
  • Vorksnrs, maybe. They're located on the Sith planet of Drumoond Kass in the new Jedi Knight expansion pack..."
