up and read "Empire Building: The Remarkable Real Life Story of the Making
of Star Wars" by Gary Jenkins, I suggest you do it now. It provides
many tidbits on the method of Lucas's madness and lots of neat behind-the-scenes
explanations of the production of the original trilogy. So, for those
that have read the book and those that have yet to but will, I think it
would be a good idea to toss around some of the "facts" of Lucas's film
making process because it is likely to repeat itself to some degree for
the prequels.
Okay,
realizing that is rather ambiguous, I'll give an example of the kind of
thing that I'm getting at: In the book, Jenkins explains that Lucas
was so offended at one point by the inter-workings of Hollywood that he
chose to resign from the Director's Guild, the Writer's Guild, and the
Academy (the folks that hand out the Oscars.) The gist of this recoil
on his part was that he could no loner hire directors that were members
of the guild (with the penalty being a rather stiff fine) and that is why
he ended up choosing Richard Marquand for ROTJ. It also may shed
light on why he has decided to return to writing and directing even though
he had sworn to never do it again. Does anyone know if Lucas has
"made his peace" with Hollywood and decided to rejoin those organizations?
I don't believe that Jenkins ever said one way or another. If Lucas
didn't, it is likely that it will be necessary for him to choose a director
that isn't in the guild meaning many of the "big names" would probably
be out of the running for directing episode 2 or 3. It is also likely
that the big name writers would be forced to stay away from script treatments
(namely Frank Darabount, "The Shawshank Redemption" and rumored writer
of episode 2.)" |
