THE BIRTH OF LUKE AND LEIA

Daniel Stahl wrote:
"After reading many of the discussion topics here and hearing vast
amounts of speculation, I would like to venture a topic on the birth
of Luke and Leia, as it will become an integral part of Episode 3.

There has been a lot of speculation as to when Padme dies and whether
or not Leia remembers her, but one thing has continued to bother me.

Obi-Wan tells Luke in RotJ that "the Emperor knew as I did, that if
Vader were to have any offspring, they would be a threat to him".

He then goes on to say that "to protect you both from the Emperor, you
were separated at birth"... "that is why your sister remains safely
anonymous".

This brings up many interesting points that may help solve some
speculation I\'ve heard.

If it is truly the Emperor that is worried that Padme would bear
offspring, why would Padme\'s children be a threat to him?

Originally I felt that the Emperor knew via the force that Vader would
fall to his son, and thus the threat came from the fact that Vader\'s
kids could turn Vader back to the good side and eventually Vader would
destroy Palpatine.

But, what if Palpatine simply fears the offspring of Padme as they
could be a Political threat to him? If Palpatine is obsessed with
"sweeping away the last remnants of the Old Republic" (as was his
motive for abolishing the Senate in ANH), then any offspring of Padme
would be a threat as they would be Heirs to the Imperial Throne, thus
becoming figure heads of the Old Republic!

Palpatine wanted to abolish the Old Republic and by controlling Padme
and Anakin, he himself could manipulate the figure heads of the
Republic itself! That to me is Palpatine\'s interest in seducing
Vader. Anakin would have become the "leader" of the Old Republic ways,
but by turning him to his side, he was able to put an end to the
Imperial Throne, and put himself as the self-proclaimed leader of the
Empire.
I picture a political model similar to Brittain where you have a
Monarchy along with a Prime Minister and Senate. FOR IF, Anakin is
killed, and Padme bears no offspring, then the Empire would be without
a ruler when Padme dies, and Palpatine could declare HIMSELF ruler of
the Old Republic because HE COULD BE THE NEXT IN LINE as the Prime
Minister/Leader of the Senate on Naboo! There would be no other heir
to the throne.(that we know of, besides maybe one of Padme\'s
relatives which might be killed in Episode 1)

So, when Padme becomes pregnant, I feel that either the Emperor does
not know, or it is hidden from him at the behest of Obi-Wan because
they realize that Palpatine\'s plan is to take over as leader of the
Old Republic (due to his incistant attacks on the President of the
known univere who in my mind, is like the Prime Minister of the
Senate).

In this respect, she must be hidden from Palpatine as her belly would
give away her pregnancy (especially with TWINS in her little figure!).
In my opinion, Padme is hidden perhaps by Bail Organa. I would not be
surprised if the Emperor has not secretly put a price on Padme\'s head
and told Vader that Obi-Wan is responsible for Padme\'s disappearance
(thus strengthening the Vader vs Obi-Wan strife).

When the twins are eventually born, they are separated and Ben takes
Luke, knowing that he must be hidden far from the Emperor and PERHAPS,
he takes Luke initially to Yoda on Dagobah (and thus the reason why
Luke vaguely remembers Dagobah as if in a dream) and confers with Yoda
before going back to Tatooine at the far reaches of the Empire where
he attempts to make amends to his brother Owen (since Ben left the
farm and got involved in the Damn Fool Idealistic Crusade). Owen and
Beru agree to take in Luke, whereas Ben will agree to stay nearby but
in hiding in case the Emperor comes looking for him, where he can keep
an eye on Luke (remember he seems to have been watching Luke in ANH as
he has "heard" that Luke has become quite a good pilot himself).

As for Leia, I feel that Bail Organa adopts Leia to his own family as
he is the throne of Alderaan, a peaceful planet, and can use his
political clout to protect Leia from the Emperor ever finding out its
Vader\'s daughter, perhaps with the hope that someday, the truth can
come out and Leia or her brother can reclaim their throne as rightful
heirs to the Old Republic, usurping Palpatine. Unfortunately Bail is
killed on Alderaan and his plans to bring Leia back as Queen are
killed with him before he gets a chance to tell Leia.(which may have
been why Tarkin was so quick to target Alderaan in ANH. Perhaps Tarkin
knew of the Emperor's desire to crush Bail Organa since Bail had been
a thorn in Palpatine's side.)

Following this thread, one thing that might be unresolved is how Padme
is killed and how long she stays with Leia after her birth. If George
Lucas had to debate over whether Leia would remember Padme, I would
say that Padme must have been with Leia for at least a short time as
Leia remembers (only feelings) that Padme was sad. Most likely sad
that her throne was gone, her husband gone, her son gone, and the fact
that even her daughter will be taken from her too.

If the Emperor\'s bid to take over the Old Republic involves killing
Padme, then I could see where he is responsible for hunting her down
secretly. I do not believe Vader is even aware of it as this would
cause a splinter between Vader and Palpatine. If somehow Palpatine can
blame Obi-Wan for Padme\'s death, then I can see where Vader would
become obsessed with killing Obi-Wan and abandoning the ideals of the
Light Side.

So in summation, I believe that Padme must be hidden/taken from both
Vader and the Emperor before her pregnancy becomes visible, well
before the twins are born. (perhaps by staging her own death and
leaving the throne open to Palpatine?)

I would LOVE to hear any more comments along these lines... I feel
there are some flaws in my theory (such as timelines between movies
and such) and would love to talk further on this topic."

the Old Republic.  By definition, a republic isn't a monarchy.  It is a
form of government ub which supreme power resides in a body of citizens
entitled to vote aand is exercised by elected officers and
representatives responsible to them and governing according to law, and
often having a chief of state who is not a monarch and who in modern
times is usually a president.  There are no 'Heirs to the Old
Republic'.  There was no Imperial Throne until Palpatine delcared
himself Emperor.  If you want an historical comparison, forget England,
and grab a history book and read up on the transformation of the Roman
republic into the Roman Empire.  Julius Caesar formed a triumvirate with
two other guys, one died and Caesar defeated the other in battle, and
was voted (by the Senate) dictator, which lasted about 3 years before
they murdered him.  That was followed by a second Triumvirate which
after battles and political manoevering ended up with Octavius holding
power, and he declared himself Emperor Augustus, creating the Empire of
Rome.  Palpatine will most likely be a combination of these two men,
Caesar and Octavius (Caesar's grand-nephew by the way).  Will Palpatine
be a great military leader?  Unknown, but he will definitely require the
military support of some kind.  But this is off topic.
So how are Luke and Leia a threat to him?  At best, Padme and her
children may be seen as symbols of the Old Republic and for that reason
are dangerous to the new Empire, as symbols tend to be.  But most likely
is the obvious reason.  Palpatine destroyed the Jedi because they were a
threat to him.  Vader's children have the potential to become great Jedi
themselves, and consequently become that same  threat to Palpatine.
There may have been some sort of prophetic vision involved, but not
necessarily.  Simply 'Jedi bad, must destroy'. "

I believe you are slightly off on your discription of the structure of
the Republic.  I don't believe the Republic has a "Monarch" at all.
Palpatine creates this "position" later on after he has gained control.
I believe that the Republic is very much like Great Britian in that it
is composed of a group of Representitives (Senators) from different
areas (planets, groups of planets, sectors or whatever) of the
galaxy.    Each planet (or groups of planets or sectors) can have their
own "local" government (appearently Naboo's government IS a Monarchy)
but they will each send their own Senator to Coruscant to represent them
in the Republic government.

The eventual takeover will mirror Hitler's rise in Germany when he got
himself voted in as Chancellor and later declared himself "Furor" (sp?).
I'm guessing Palpatine is the Naboo Senator who gets himself elected
"Chancellor" (which is Terence Stamp's character's position in SW1)
somewhere down the line.  Then he uses other devices (politics, Clone
Wars, etc) to eventually declare himself Emperor.  I don't think
Palpatine will be too worried about "Royal" lines since the Republic
isn't a monarchy anyway.  The only threat Luke and Leia would have to
him would be their Force abilities sometime when they are older.

As far as Padme's death, some people think her storyline should be
resolved before SW3 is finished.  This would sort of contradict Leia's
statement about remembering her, since Leia will be a new born by the
end of SW3.  This is a tough one.  It would have been a lot easier if
Leia hadn't remembered her.  Some have suggested that Leia remembered
her through the "force".  I think that it is possible but kinda hokey.
There was also a rumor at one time that said Padme's race (Naboo) is a
dying race.  Maybe she dies of this "disease" sometime after SW3.  Not
sure on this one.  One thing I'm sure of Luke and Leia will be new
born's at or near the end of SW3, Lucas said so.  Maybe that can help
you with your "timeline"."

the prequels are considered a "darker" trilogy, one would have to
speculate how we could get some kind of happy ending for Episode 3.  I
would like to see a 2 way escape towards the end of this episode, where
Vader is hot on the trail of Obi Wan and Padme.  The two will split up
to make their escape more probable, with Obi wan taking Luke and Padme
taking Leia.  Obi wan will make a thrilling escape from..(?) and take
Luke to his new "parents" on Tatooine.  Meanwhile, things take a turn
for the worse for Padme as it becomes clear that she will not be able to
escape from Vader.  She runs into two trusted droids  (I wonder who) and
they both escape to Alderaan with Leia while Padme meets her ultimate

I like your ideas. Here's mine for the very end:

I think that the final scenes of Episode III will be the birth of
Luke and then she gives up Luke to Obi Wan. Once he has gone, Leia is
born. She summons Bail and gives her up too. She then starts crying.
A few minutes later, perhaps with a scene showing Ben taking off in
the Falcon for Degobah inbetween, and ultimately visiting Yoda,
one of palpatine's Goon squads marches into wherever Padme is hiding
(how about if it is lead by archvillain Tarkin?), and Tarkin says
"I hear congratulations are in order, Your Highness"
Padme looks on in shock as he smirks.
Tarkin : "Complements from the Emperor himself"
There will then be cut to outside the room, and a gunshot will ring
out. The troops then walk out. Perhaps stormtroopers. Cut to inside
the room. Padme is lying motionless on the floor, pained eyes with
tears rolling down her cold cheeks.
then a cut to a sternfaced Palpatine, now hooded, and his stern
face grows into a flickering smile, then a grin, to show his evil
teeth, and finally a cackle that grows and grows. And as the folorn
music comes in, as the camera pans up to show Imperial City in all
its "glory", Palpatine's laugh still drifts upwards. The music will
make you cry at this scene. No big Fanfare. Nothing particularly

Now, since The Force. Net in their infinite capability to find the

It would also account for the reason that the early discriptions cited the

If you take these the genetic problem into account for both Luke and

This genetic problem could be GL's way of fixing the problem with the

some indication that Padme is dying (perhaps an intricule part of Episode
Three)..and Obi-Wan (Or Palpatine) will allow Anakin to believe so. I don't
think Lucas is going to have her killed in execution style (Which is common
when a new government takes over)....For several Reasons

1)The afformentioned Leia's recollectance of her mother
2)Palpatine is usurping the Interglactic Seat of power...not the Throne of

3)Padme is only a threat to Palpatine, if she makes herself one...Other the
fact that she is the wife of his new "convert"...unless she gets in his way,
Palpatine would have no reason to execute her...unless she was coming between
him and Anakin..in which case it would not be a "military" execution

Even though the new triology will be darker, I don't think it's going to have

A fitting ending would be as stated by many to have Obi Wan leaving Luke in

"Ok, we have all heard that the people from Naboo are from a dying race due to some defect in their genetic makeup, and that to compensate for this they use cloning technology so that their race can survive (correct me if I'm wrong). This would indeed provide a plausable explanation for the decaying appearance of the emperor in ROTJ, (as suggested by DarthMaul1) but at the same time would contradict the theory that Padme's death at such a young age was a direct result of this defect; after all Palpatine, (who we now believe to be senator for the planet Naboo), is supposedly 100 years plus in ROTJ (I think)! Surely he should have died from this defect long before. Unless it was the power of the dark side keeping Palpatine alive, or he is not actually a member of the Naboo race, but merely represents them in the Senate. But how would the use of cloning technology allow the race to survive? If they clone themselves, then surely the whole population would be no older than Padme, when she died so young; and Palpatine, (if he is a member of the Naboo race), at the age he is in episode 1 should have already died from the defects in his genetic makeup. Also, if Padme dies as young as we all believe she does, then why would Luke and Leia not inheret the same genetic defect and suffer a similar untimely death? Infact if they had inhereted this defect then it is likely they would die at an even earlier age than Padme since they did not have access to the cloning facility!
I'm just not convinced the reason for Padme's death is due to a genetic defect, there are too many questions surrounding it. However, I am open to suggestions to put my mind to rest on this theory, or to suggestions as to how Padme may die so young, (no violent executions or suicides though, don't forget Star Wars is supposed to be enjoyed by the whole family, young and old)."

of the rumors swirling out there.

But, I think the perfect ending to Episode 3 would be Darth Vader rising
from the ashes (almost literally) of Anakin Skywalker and being "reborn"
as Darth Vader while intercut with these scenes would be the birth of
Luke and Leia.  Lucas could show Anakin climbing out of the acid pit or
volcano or whatever it is and then show the twin's mother in her labor
pains.  Perhaps Obi Wan and Yoda could be in attendance to provide the
proper commentary on the signifigance of the 2 infants.  But think how
cool the contrasts would be: Evil Vader getting suited up in his new
equipment and death-black garb.  Cut to pure and innocent newborn twins
in white swaddling clothes.  (Lucas should not pass up the chance to
capitalize on the obvious Luke/Messiah parralels.)  Cut to Vader
kneeling before the Emperor and acknowledging him as Vader's new master
(who is in attendance at Darth Vader's birth because somebody has to
help him get into the suit and breathing apparatus).  Cut back to Obi
Wan lifting the new born Luke over his head and declaring him "A New
Hope for the Galaxy."  Trumpets, fanfare, triumph out of tragedy, El
Fin!

Lucas doesn't have to show Leia remembering her mother or even the
seperation of the twins.  The above scenario is the most dramatic one I
can envision.  The rest of the story could just take place after the end
of Episode 3.  As a final note, I agree that Luke is taken to Dagobah
before he ends up on Tatooine, thus accounting for his dreamlike memory
of it.  Up till now, I thought that comment to R2 was based on his
hallucination/conversation with Ben as Luke is freezing on Hoth after
the Wampa attack.  (I still think he should of spent the night in the
cave.  The wampa's pretty much out of commission, he's got to have

then this means Vader knew of Luke's existence well before ESB.

Another thing to ponder is the Degobah scene in ESB where Yoda and Ben
are talking after Luke leaves for Cloud City.  Ben makes the statement,
"He was our last hope" (referring to Luke's possible failure at
Bespin).  Yoda looks to Ben and tells him, "No, there is another."
Okay, so this sounds to me like OB1 knew nothing of Leia until that
point.

So, perhaps in the shuffle of it all, Padme chooses to tell OB1 about
Luke, but NOT Leia, and indeed takes her to Alderaan.  And there is
where it gets confusing, because in Jedi, Ben tells Luke what he and
Padme did with separating the two twins.  In the films, OB1 has always
been shown to tell half truths and twisted bits of info.

I believe that Padme will indeed go to Bail Organa while Ben will go to
Owen and Beru.  Because Leia does remember bits of her mother, what if
she marries Bail and passes Leia off as his daughter.  In anger, Vader
has Padme killed for leaving him.  In pregnancy, we can only speculate
on a 9 month window (assuming "Nabooians" are like us) to work with.
One could even say that the protect the children, she only tells Ben

Ben's final attempt to turn Anakin back might have been directed by his

In terms of the dying race idea being due to a disease, I do not think

dying politically and as such were beginning to lose more ad more contact
with the Republic.  The cloning technology could have been only in use by
the more powerful members of Naboo Society.  The rank and file of the

causes with nothing lending itself to a wasting disease.  That I think is
a little farfetched.  Dying race is not literally by a disease.  It also
does not talk of those who are away from the planet and not "considered"
part of the population.

Padme's death could have been from heartbreak at Anakins turning to the
dark side.  That could be the reasoning for her being sad.  Also as well
as the fact that she was used to being free and did not suit well to the
hiding/running from Palpatine's search.

TO counter that though would be, if Leia was to young to remember more
than feelings about Padme, then how would she remember the actual
circumstances of her death.  Padme could have commited suicide or been
killed in an accident without Leia remembering.  The death could have been
to traumatic to remember as well.  Different reasons.

But these are just my thoughts on the matter.  Any gripes/couter arguments
welcome."

they are in fact using the force.  Vader sensed Luke's ability as he was
preparing to destroy the Death Star (with the help of the force).  Ben
and later Luke were trained Jedi knights, which is why they could be
sensed, but Leia was totally untrained, competely out of touch with her
potential ability with the force.  In the same way, Vader sensed only
Ben on the Death Star, not Luke, because Luke was at that time
practically untrained.  This seems to be the simplest answer that fits
all the facts.
This also can explain Ben's scene with Yoda in ESB.  If we assume
Ben knows about Leia, it still makes sense that he would say Luke was
the last hope because Leia remained totally untrained.  Sense he (Ben)
is dead and Yoda is aging, Ben sees the training of Leia--if Luke
fails--as an impossability (or at least a long shot).  Yoda has a
different opinion, saying that he had hope in "the other".  In that
context, I think everything makes sense, but I'm open to debate the

Ben a lightsabre, telling him to give it to his son when he is old enough.
Anakin has failed as a Jedi, and this is his last act of good before he
fully becomes the Emperor's pawn. Though this will conflict with the
Ben/Anakin battle at the lava pit, as this is the last time the two see
each other in the films, at least while Anakin is Anakin and not Vader.
Why is Anakin such an angry and jaded youth? Is it because someone he loves
dies early on? Could it be Shmi? Or does Anakin have a brother or sister,
like in the earlier version of the Star Wars story? The birth of twins is a
genetic thing, so someone in Luke and Leia's family must have a twin. Is it
Anakin, or does Padme have a twin somewhere? Or maybe Shmi has a twin,
possibly Qui Gon Jinn. GL will be looking for revelations to top Luke and
Leia being Vader's children. I'd say that they will go with Anakin's twin
brother dying early on. Why haven't you heard anything on it? Well, it
would have to be a closer guarded secret. No one knew that Vader was Luke's
father until the film came out."

martyr-esq fashion.  I don't think Padme dying of disease would be an
adequate way of removing a main character.  SNS22 said in march that GL
would not succomb to having a storm strooper shoot her in cold blood.  I
personally think he would.  We all have seen the scenes the original
trilogy (obi wan struck down by vader, dr. what-his-name loosing an arm in
the cantina, C-3po getting blasted to bits, Luke's hand getting chopped
off).  Those are only a few of the examples, and let's not forget the many
times vader uses the force to choke someone.
What I would like to see in Episode three is for the twins to be born
early in the film.  My reasoning for this is that a reoccuring theme in
this huge epic is family, relationships or lack there of between father and
son/mother and daughter).  We need the movie to show a great deal of the
relationship blossoming between Padme and her children (at least leia,
since luke is supposed to have no memory of her)  (I personally met a lot
of people from my birth to one year of age, and remember none of them).
I think the love triangle between Obi-wan, Padme, and Annikan does not
exist, but I think it would be a cool idea for GL to throw an
Shakespeare/Othello-like story line where Palpatine poisons Annikan into
thinking Padme loves Obi-wan.  This would build into the ultimate emotional
battle between Obi-wan and Annikan, where the former would constantly deny
anything happening between him and Padme.  Annikan "dies" and reemerges as
Vader, he will be full of anger toward Obi-wan still.  In tradition
Shakespeare fashion, he will return to Padme as Vader.  She won't recognize
him, ask who he is.  He will say some phrase which she recognizes as a
trademark of Annikan.  Then, when it finally dawns on her who this
mechanical monster is before her, Vader will strike her down (a martyr to
her people, and as a testament to her constant love for Annikan).  What
follows has already been discussed involving the hiding of the children.
(I liked the idea of Obi-wan walking into the sunset on tatooine).  Of
course, there is no knowing whether this is going to happen until the
movies come out.  But, look at the evidence.  According to theforce.net
reports from statements by some of the actors in the prequels, some have
compared GL to Shakespeare.  With many of the plotlines from Star Wars
taken also directly from classic mythology, I think it is very plausible
that Episode III will turn out to be a Sci-fi version of Shakespeare's
classic Othello.  That's just my two cents worth."

When reference is made to a "dying race," I have to wonder why that is.  A

thought of is an inability or lessened ability to reproduce.  That, to me,
perfectly explains why cloning would be used as a means to strengthen the society.
This also makes it easier to understand why Anakin might not have known about Padme's pregnancy.  If it was assumed that she was (nearly) incapable of
having children, then he would have had no reason at all to expect offspring.
It would have been far easier to keep both Luke and Leia hidden under such a
circumstance, and would have made Padme much less of a threat, explaining why she was allowed to live on under the stewardship of Biail Organa.

Padme.  You are right on all counts of threats to the Emperor.  If
what I read about the prequels are true (fan fiction, and published
materials) Palpatine takes over the weakened Republic and starts his
new order.

If he is a member of the dying Naboo, he wants Padme dead to give him
no domestic opposition )for as in a democratic society like Canada,
UK, etc. the monarch still has some ceremonial, loyalty pull with the
citizenry).  Also, she could also bear miracle children (she herself
may be a miracle child) after all, her children are with the power of
the Force, restore order to the galaxy.  This would mean if she were
saved from the enemy her genes would rule, while the crumbling
Palpatine would die, and have to rely on the cloning.

Also if the rumours of Palaptine being Darth Sidious (I read this
somewhere on the Net) are true, then he is aware of Jedi (really
powerful ones) who could threaten him.  That's why Anakin becomes
victim to the Emperor.

As for Padme being slaughtered, I don't think so!  At the end of an
early draft of Ep. #3 Palpatine shows Vader his wife's death and
Obi-Wan as the killer (a trick) so that Vader will be completely
under the control of the Emperor.  Yes, Padme is alive at the end of
the story.

I also believe she's still alive, even during Ep.'s #4,5,6.  Why?
Palpatine knows she's still alive, Vader doesn't.  Padme goes into
hiding awaiting the arrival and victory of the NEW HOPE.  For if
Vader and Palpatine discover Leia before Alderaan is destroyed,
there is no reason to go to Obi-Wan to bring in Luke.  Likewise if
Mr. Organa doesn't convince Leia to flyby Tattooine on her way to
Alderaan, the planet won't be destroyed and no need for Luke and Ben,
since from Alderaan they can  launch the attack.

Maybe keeping her alive and having her "die" while Leia is young will
be reason to bring about the third trilogy (Ep.s #7,8,9).

But then again, my reasoning and opinions have been a little
misguided."

It was under the Character Bio for Princess Leia. Now, I assume that GL

apparently, Leia is a witness to this growing up. If the third movie

suggestion given on the treatment of the latter character.  Leia was
largely unused in ROTJ, because I don't think George Lucas decided to make
her Luke's sister until late in the making of TESB.  If he'd had more time
to think about it, he would have seen that the proper ending of ROTJ would
have been to include Leia in the final confronatation with Vader and
Palpatine.
Keep in mind that even if Leia is untrained, Yoda's apparent faith in
her(as he stated in TESB) had to mean something!  She had to have some kind
of importance.  And since the Emperor knew full well that Luke was alive, I
assumed that the real importance of Leia would surface here.
Also, notice that Leia did use the force at the end of not only ROTJ, but
in TESB.  Remember how Obi-Wan and Yoda kept emphasizing that they couldn't
help Luke when he fights Vader, and that he still wasn't ready?  Well, he
didn't learn nuthin' after TESB since Yoda croacked, so technically, he
only had time to teach himself between TESB and ROTJ(I don't even entertain
the thought that that awful "Shadows of the Empire" ever took place, but
then who does except Bantam Books?).  Anyway, the ending of TESB saw Luke
loose his hand, the fight, and he was hanging from an upside down cross(so
he's essentially in hell) and almost ready to fall, when he calls for Ben.
Sorry, kid no answer.  So he calls for Leia, and SHE HEARS HIM!  This is
important, because this was the first clue that she too could use the
force!
I suppose Yoda's comment about another, could have only referred to her
importance in this scene, hence continuing the second installments
perfection.  But still, Leia was pulled into the situation, she used the
force, and now when she's revealed to be his sister, she had to be included
in the rest of the Vader/Luke story.
I keep thinking that Palpatine had forseen that had Padme had a daughter,
it wouldn't be a threat, but a son would be.  I say that, because it might
explain why the twins had to be separated, and why Ben chose to stay close
to Luke, and not Leia.  If there was a little sexism in Palpatine's mind,
it might justfiy Ben showing preferential treatment.
Also, I why would Palpatine not sense Luke in ROTJ when they went to
Endor?  That was the single oddest comment the Emperor made, that I just
can't figure out.  Everthing else fits, but that one seems to come out of
left field.
Any way, that's my two cents:) "

?  I think that we should see Luke and Leia be born in Episode 3.  Otherwise, that would leave too much to be implied in between 3 and 4.
?  I seriously doubt that the Naboo have any sort of genetic disease.  That really doesn't mesh with anything else in Star Wars.  Lucas, to me, doesn't seem the type to go that route.  It seems too easy to say, "Well, hmm.  I need to get rid of the Naboo, because if I don't then people will wonder why they're not mentioned in Episodes 4, 5, and 6.  I know!  I'll give them a *genetic disease*! " Come on, people...  When they said they were a "dying" race, it doesn't have to be taken litlerally.  In fact, I think Lucas would be the kind of person to go the sneaky route and make us think one thing and be totally surprised by the truth...
?  I am getting totally pissed at the people who are implying that Leia is inferior to Luke in the way of Force powers because she's female.  I also don't think that Luke's powers "rubbed off" on Leia.  (If that is so, why doesn't Chewie or someone get it, too?)  I think that Leia is as powerful as Luke.  Remember when Luke says to Leia, "In time, you will learn to use it as I have"?  He pretty much says that she could be his equal if she was trained.  I think that this is also the key to Vader overlooking her.  She wasn't trained, so therefore she had no Force presence for him to pick up.  It's a little foggy, though, how he could miss the fact that she's his daughter, but maybe because she didn't know it, either, he couldn't pull that from her mind.
?  I don't think that Padme dying violently is totally out of the question.  It would be nice is she died peacfully, or maybe didn't even die at all, but just went off into hiding, but we cannot dismiss the execution thing.  I don't know why she would be executed, as a few of you said, Padme herself wasn't really a threat to anyone.  But maybe Palpatine wanted to erase all of Anakin's past so he would be more of a slave to the dark side in his new Vader identity.  Maybe Padme was Force-sensitive (hey, you never know), and she was killed in the Jedi purge.  Even though she wasn't a Jedi, she could still be sensitive and Palpatine might have just remembered that she was.  (This sort of brings me to my next point, below, but I'll move on.)  And maybe, just maybe, Padme died by accident.  A speeder crash, a stray blaster bolt, who knows?
?  This radical idea just popped into my mind: what if all of the Naboo were Force-sensitive?  Then Palpatine (and Lucas) would have an excuse to get rid of them and Padme.   Also, it could lend itself to the thought that maybe Luke and Leia didn't get their Force powers from dear old Dad, but Mom.  That would explain why they're so "good".  Perhaps the Skywalker line was tainted, and all Skywalkers were prone to falling to the dark side.  I dunno...  Just a thought.
?  I think the idea of a love triangle between Obi-Wan, Anakin, and Padme is  good one... To hell with all of this age-difference stuff!   (But it does make Obi-Wan and Vader's duel with "swords" a bit too weird for me...)
?  For the "There is another" stuff...  I think that the idea that Leia was untrained, and therefore not being the Jedi's "last hope" is plausible.  But Yoda, who was able to see into the future (even though it was uncertain) saw that she would one day be able to become a Jedi...
?  I think that Obi-Wan took Luke to his brother's  and then watched him from a distance...  I also think that Padme took Leia to her buddy Bail on Alderaan and died...
